FDA Alerts Pet Owners and Veterinarians About ... Certain Flea and Tick Products

FDA Alerts Pet Owners and Veterinarians About Potential for Neurologic Adverse Events Associated with Certain Flea and Tick Products

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is alerting pet owners and veterinarians to be aware of the potential for neurologic adverse events in dogs and cats when treated with drugs that are in the isoxazoline class.

Since these products have obtained their respective FDA approvals, data received by the agency as part of its routine post-marketing activities indicates that some animals receiving Bravecto, Nexgard or Simparica have experienced adverse events such as muscle tremors, ataxia, and seizures. Another product in this class, Credelio, recently received FDA approval. These products are approved for the treatment and prevention of flea infestations, and the treatment and control of tick infestations.

The FDA is working with manufacturers of isoxazoline products to include new label information to highlight neurologic events because these events were seen consistently across the isoxazoline class of products.

The FDA carefully reviewed studies and other data on Bravecto, Credelio, Nexgard and Simparica prior to approval, and these products continue to be safe and effective for the majority of animals. The agency is asking the manufacturers to make the changes to the product labeling in order to provide veterinarians and pet owners with the information they need to make treatment decisions for each pet on an individual basis. Veterinarians should use their specialized training to review their patients’ medical histories and determine, in consultation with pet owners, whether a product in the isoxazoline class is appropriate for the pet.

In southern CA, flea season is nearly year-round. I have a severe allegy to flea and mosquito bites -- they form huge blisters on me so controlling fleas is a must.

We've tried various natural products but nothing really worked. Reluctantly our dogs and cats now get treated with drops on the back of their necks monthly. I hate the idea of using pesticides, but don't see an alternative.

My last dog died of cancer and I wondered if those drops could have anything to do with it.

WE used to put flea collars on cats until we used a Zodiac collar that sent one of our cats into seizures a couple of minutes after it was put on. The vet warned us she's seen that before and apparently Zodiac had other complaints. So the drops seemed better than that.

A Seresto collar from March through November (I think it only lasts 8 months or so anyway), Nexguard, and Heartgard for heartworm year round. The ticks are ever present in my part of Virginia. I've seen maybe two fleas in the house in ten years, which may or may not have been brought in by the dogs. Yes, two. But the ticks - goodness, they are everywhere. If the dogs bring them in, they can crawl off of them and onto us. If they stay on the dogs, they'll bite them and die.

Our recently departed Jack came to us from a shelter with heartworms. We joke that our $200 shelter dog became our $900 shelter dog because he needed treatment. The treatment was horrible and painful.

We've not seen any negative reactions from the medicine, but of course that's only our experience. We did have a Cavalier, Abby, who had seizures, but she was so medically screwed up (mitral valve disease, seizures, deafness at age 4, inflammatory bowel disease) and died at age 7 that I cannot say if it was her horrific breeding or medicine we gave her.

My guess would be that it was a combo of both things.

How very sad.

It is not your fault (it took me awhile to get to that point - blaming myself for my kitty's death). I was doing what they told me to do.

They are incompetent and they killed her! That is the reality of it! In end, she was blind, paralyzed and scared to death. It was the worst thing I've ever seen. Sons a bitches! Greedy sons a bitches! It is really worth putting drops or a collar or some other toxic poison on your best friend because it is "convenient"? I would hope not but ...

Hang in there!!

Do not use that toxic thing, please! I beg of you!

Don't believe it?

Google: "complaints Seresto collar" and you'll learn the truth about it!

>>Today, 3/9/2016 is a sad day for our family. We had to put our beloved 10 yr. old Golden Retriever Cali to sleep. We will never know the exact cause of her problems but I feel it's important to share with everyone.

About 3 months ago we purchased a Seresto flea collar. It worked great. After about a week her fleas were gone.

One week ago today she had a violent seizure. As I was preparing to take her to the vet she snapped out of it and seemed normal. The vet said they don't become concerned until after 2-3 seizures. Two days later she had another and I took her in. Her blood work came back fine and the vet said she could possibly have cancer. We could have taken her for more tests to find out what was wrong but at her age I don't know what good it would have done.

We then researched the flea collar and saw some of the reviews and were shocked. I cut it off, bathed her and hoped for the best.

Over the weekend the seizures continued. She began to urinate in the house, never has done that. She had trouble keeping her balance and was lethargic. Even when things were good here head would shake. She would also be restless at night and would pace around.

Monday I picked up pills from the vet for her seizures.

Yesterday I returned home from work and she couldn't stand up. As I talked to her she could not focus, her eyes rolled upward. I did manage to get her up, she peeed in the house, went outside and pooped but fell over while doing so. When my son came home we spent some quality time on a blanket in out living room feeding her what she loved best...chips. Later I made her favorite, a steak dinner and she loved it.

My wife slept in our foyer with her last night. About 3am she yelled for me as Cali was having another seizure. I calmed her down and slept the rest of the night with her. We had a vet appointment at 8:30am. I knew why we were going. I was hoping for a miracle but knew what the ultimate decision would be.

In no way could we leave for work every day knowing she's at home having seizures and suffering. Even as I write this I question if we should have done more, taken her elsewhere. She gave us a great life and we wanted to do the same for her and not let her suffer. What happened to her seems more extreme from what others experienced.

We will never know if she had cancer or something else. All I know is that I wish we had stuck to Frontline! My gut tells me the collar had something to do with her demise. After reading reviews I just wanted to share with others. Maybe this is more of a problem and the word just isn't out yet.

Neurotoxic paralysis = one messed up way to die!

Do NOT USE any of these products on your beloved dog or cat!

What do I do? I have three cats and one of them loves to be flea combed. I never find fleas on any of my cats as they do not go outside and they are combed daily for fleas; the one that loves it is my go to cat for combing. If there are none on him, none on the others.

Also, worked the house over good to be sure that any fleas to be found are dealt with quickly! It requires 6 weeks of vacuuming up the house on a DAILY basis.

Don't be lazy, get to work, that's what I have to say about this.

Do you really need to put poison on your best friend in life?

I regret ever taking my cat to that stupid vet (he no longer has a job for what it is worth; little restitution when I think of the horrific death I witnessed!). Thanks for nothing you PIGS at and wow do you ever suck!

They were supposedly treating my cat for FAD (FAD = feline allergic dermatitis), not fleas!

Glad to see this info. is finally getting out there. For a real shock, check out on Facebook "Does Trifexis Kill Dogs?". Horrifying, simply horrifying!
