Related: About this forumFlea and Tick prevention?
Our 11 pound, almost 1 year old, Shih-Tzu needs flea and tick prevention. We tried Trifexis but she reacted badly to it. Now she is on HeartGuard for heartworms and she tolerates it well but it has no flea and tick prevention.
We have a topical but are leary of applying it since she is so sensitive.
We will be traveling soon in our motorhome. Some of it in tick country.
Anyone have any ideas on how to handle this?

(9,722 posts)If I remember correctly...the active agent in the collar does not enter the blood stream but kills on contact with the insect which of course means it has to get to the collar, fleas maybe, ticks ???.
Every dog is different but my 20 lb. Havanese tolerates K9 Advantix II well. Biggest problem is hes literally on the break point weight wise gotta go with the large dog instead of small dog vet said you dont have to use all of it.
The extremely cold weather may hold populations down, but only if youre going where it was frigid this winter. Thats what Im hoping for here in Michigan.

(32,974 posts)Capstar is like a death pill to fleas on doggs and cats. I gave that to my seizure dog, on occasion, (when the garlic in his raw foods failed). After an hour, he got a bath &, brush out.
But ticks, if you're not gonna med, a tick puller and groo.ing right afyer you leave a nature area.
Capstar is great. We switched to it when Frontline stopped working (some fleas on the east coast have developed an immunity to Frontline). Advantage still works here but, once we tried Capstar, there was no going back.
Since she is sensitive, I agree with the idea of grooming and pulling ticks instead of meds. In our experience, the tick repellents tend to be more problematic than the flea ones.
Your vet will know the best course of action for your dog's particular needs.

(32,974 posts)Alex The Wonder Dog had idiopathic epilepsy. I realized that he had his 1st seizure after mange dip, then, several wks later, he took, Advantage
Within 48 hrs after that & the next 2 doses he had grand mal seizures.
This was in 97, and that particular med was new. Alex was also part BC, who due to bad breeding in the US, has epilepsy in the breed lines. The warning labels have changed since then.
I tried some essential oils, with my limited internet access info(IRC-BBS,no search engines ofany real size then) and I tried an essential oil, well he seized from that as well. It may have been bergamot, maybe, possibly, it was 1 time usage in 97, so it is not sure to me that is what it was.
B/C of those several individual points, I would strongly urge you to consult with those groups AND a holistic vet. Alex lived a long and happy life. I had my heart dog for 12 years.
