Related: About this forumHow do I train a cat to sleep away from me?
My cat passed away two months ago and Im thinking about getting another.
I live in a one bedroom apartment. I would like for my cat to sleep in the utility room. My older cat slept with me until she got elderly and then would allow me to put her in the utility room to sleep and not yowl or tear up the linoleum. Otherwise, she would wake me up at dark 30.
Sometimes more than once. It was like being a parent of an infant who never got older.
Is it possible for me to train even a young cat (not a kitten) to be content to sleep in the utility room?

(7,947 posts)Put the lovey in a nice bed in the utility room. And never cuddle the cat in your bedroom. Keep the cuddles in the living room.
Kitten won't even know about the bedroom unless you tell them. Be tough.😉

(31,110 posts)It wouldnt be a problem of if we could synchronize our wake ups but I dont think that will be a possibility.
If the cat didnt wake up unless I did it wouldnt be any problem.

(9,265 posts)Both our boys sleep with us and they dont wake us up. It depends on what kind of feeding schedule you have and if the cat is a grazer or gobbles down their food all at once. Our boys are grazers and dont wake us up for breakfast. However a cat I had years ago refused to touch dry food and was quite obnoxious until he got his morning can.

(23 posts)Cats should not be trained.
People who get their knickers in a knot about cats jumping on the kitchen counter shouldnt have cats. Charlie jumps up there to give me head butts and purrs while I cook. Im honored by his affection.

(12,631 posts)(somewhat) trained cat. My rescue kitty's first owner apparently taught him "come' & "stay". Because he understood the concept of human utterances, he learned "sit" and "get down" and " get brushed" very quickly.
It's great to have a cat that behaves cooperatively, at least some of the time. He also knows to stay off counters, and that human skin is not the same as clothing. He's a real gentleman. Well, for a cat.

(31,388 posts)Put the dog bed on the floor of your room, or, train the dog to sleep in its crate.
OR, get two compatible kitties and they will sleep together in another room.

(20,759 posts)But I have two cats and a Miniature Dachshund that sleep in the bed with me at night. The doxie insists on being under the covers. They don't wake me up because I sleep like the dead.
