Dog trancing! It's a thing.

My deaf Catahoula mix has always done this and we didn't know what it was. She will put herself in a hypnotic state and will continue for up to an hour. One of my sons found some examples by accident when he was surfing obscure dog sites. This explains everything and it's so cool! Does anyone else have a dog that trances?

[you may want to mute the video because the music is distracting and lame]

1. Honestly, and I have lots of dog experience, I have never seen this! Did have a special needs

(deaf) Catahoula at our rescue shelter. Very spiritual doggie. But really did not know about or ever see a dog trancing. She’s very graceful and elegant.

2. I checked out some other videos. It looks like a mild but extended seizure of some sort. nt

4. It's not a seizure.

All the information I read stated that it is not harmful and that you should not interrupt your dog because they seem to enjoy it. Some dog breeds have more of a propensity to trance than others: Greyhounds, Jack Russells, and the bully breeds.

3. Have a girl dog

that used to poke her head under the curtains, then walk slowly so that the curtain dragged the full length of her body.
This one is doing it with the plant.

It's a sensory thing. Self stroking, type of thing. Very relaxing, very fulfilling.

Not harmful, they grow out of it.

5. They frequently use curtains and hanging clothes.

The last clip on this video is a bulldog using curtains to trance. What strikes me when I watch mine trance is how very slowly they move; it actually looks like slow motion. They also call it "ghost walking." Mine has never grown out if and she is 11-years-old.

6. Great Dane did this

She'd get herself halfway into a big thick hedge and freeze. Her tail would go straight out and she would be immobile for about ten minutes. Come out happy and playful, so we decided it was her therapy. She was a rescue, history unknown

7. There ya go...

I guess it's relatively rare. I went to a ballgame yesterday with a friend of mine who has been a veterinarian for over forty years and she had never heard of it. I had to show her the videos and she forwarded the clips to some vet friends. I guess we've had special doggos.
