Kitty sinus infections--

Anyone have experience with this?

First, I am the one with the cat who must wear a collar for two weeks and the good news is that she is wearing it fine. She has a nightly "TLC" time when one of us holds her on our laps and she can sleep without the collar and purr and wash her paws.

But to begin at the beginning:
Last May this kitty developed an abscess on her forehead which then burst open. The vet put her on an antibiotic and said that it would drain for "a while".

Meanwhile, our other cat, Camilla, went through her final illness and died at the end of July. This kitty, named Little Kitty, was eating and acting normally except for the crusty forehead which I would periodically soak with a warm cloth, so she was put on the back burner, so to speak.

Then, in August I realized that this thing had really gone on way too long so I took her back to the vet--this time the partner looked at her and said he thought he could feel something in the wound, and recommended surgery to clean it out. Since he was the senior partner we took his advice and on August 22nd she had the surgery, the collar put on and both an antibiotic injection and an oral pill, Clavamox. He never did find any foreign object, but did find an opening through the skull and into her sinus cavity, which he flushed out and got rid of a lot of pus and stuff. Stitched her up and sent her home. They were dissolving stitches.

A week later, this last Thursday, the wound re-opened by itself and more pus and drainage began to come out. Call to the vet--he said that after the antibiotics wear off, then he can culture it and find out specifically what antibiotic she needs. Meanwhile she has an open wound again in her forehead.

I googled "sinus infection in cats" this morning, and found that a sinus infection can cause an abscess just like the one she had! They had assured me at the vets' office that it was from an external wound and could not have come from inside. But Little Kitty is an indoor cat and we can't imagine how she would have gotten hurt, unless by a stray paw swipe from one of the other cats.

Now I am really unsure that I should trust our vet--if this diagnosis and treatment was all wrong. I think now that the first time the antibiotic didn't clear it all up, they should have cultured it and found the right antibiotic, and realized that maybe this was a sinus infection and not a wound! She seems to have had feline herpes all her life--she is nine--and from time to time has watery eyes, sniffy nose and sneezing--and that weakens the immune system and would naturally lead to something like an infection.

I am so sad she has had to go through all of this! She is the sweetest little thing--affectionate and easygoing. I only want to fix her up and not put her through any more bungling, if that indeed is what has happened here. My plan is to take her to a new vet clinic next week and see what they say.

Has anyone seen a sinus infection go into abscess like this? We like to think our vets know more than we do, and of course they do, but now I'm seriously beginning to doubt what they've been telling me about this case.

Antibiotics and cleaning did no good. Then he and his partner retired to Hawaii and took their cats along. After they arrived, the cat with the cruddy eyes went and lay outside inside the tropical sun. He would come in only for food and water. After two or three days, they noticed that his eyes had cleared up.

I myself can testify to the curative powers of sunshine.

One year when Portland's rainy winter went on longer than usual (the 7-day forecast was "Rain (or showers)-high 55" for weeks at a time), I developed a massive respiratory infection that went from being bronchitis to sinus and back again. As the rain dragged on, I kept thinking, "I need sunshine. I need sunshine." In particular, I had a sinus infection and a cough that just would not go away.

I was a member of a Sunday afternoon movie group at the time (we saw the last matinee showing and then went to dinner together) and because of my cough and general yucky feeling, I hadn't attended for weeks. On the first sunny Sunday of the year, the de facto leader of the group called and asked if I was coming, and I said that my cough was still so bad that I'd be disruptive to a movie audience but that I was getting stir crazy and would join them for dinner.

Because it was such a beautiful day, I went to Portland's Pioneer Courthouse Square and sat in the sun for about an hour before dinner. I coughed through dinner, but when I woke up the next morning, I felt much better. I made a point of having some outside time for the next couple of days, and by Thursday, I was fine.

At the time, I attributed the miracle cure to the sun drying up all the mold that can grow in a damp winter, but years later, my brother told me about the latest research on Vitamin D. It seems that 10 minutes of direct sunlight is equivalent to 2000IUs of Vitamin D.

When one of my Facebook friends in Portland complained of a cold that wouldn't go away, I recommended sitting outside on the next sunny day, and sure enough, it worked.

So my suggestion is that you give her some sunlight exposure. If you have a backyard where she can lie around safely or if you can take her out on a leash, see what happens. It won't hurt her.

Since she is in her collar, she isn't about to run away, so we have been able to take her out on supervised walks in the yard. It delights her and gets her mind off her troubles. Ordinarily, she is a "runner" and will dash for the nearest thicket if left free. So she's been an indoor cat. Best way all around for cats, anyway.

She can also sun herself on our south facing screened porch, so maybe the sun will help. Thanks!

He was sneezing blood.

The vet gave him a pink liquid in a small bottle, it had to be refrigerated ... the name is skipping me at the moment. It could be "Clavomox", but I'm not sure of that.

She had me give it to him for a week. I put it in his food. After the week, he still was sneezing a little blood but not as much. The vet had another look at him and decided he should take the pink liquid for a second week. After that, he seemed to not be sneezing blood anymore.

I was really happy about that, but the vet said that what he had could be chronic and there is a good chance that it would be on-going. However, he still occasionally sneezes but it doesn't have blood in it any more.

At least that's what you give kids sometimes--it is pink and needs to be refrigerated.

3. Doctors and vets and the internet.

It is always the same, whether it is for your own body or a pet's health. The medical professionals will go with the most obvious problem first and work from there. And we non-professionals will trust the internet over the doctors, since they often don't get it right the first time. Really? Trust the internet over all else? Although I do use the internet for information and things that I can talk over with my doctor/vet, I have to say that it is only a tool to educate me and not something to diagnose me.

It seems to me that your vet did the same thing and I would not be so quick to fault him. They are familiar with the animal and what has been done so far, and they are at the same point that you are....there is an infection that antibiotics they are using is not helping. I do understand that you aren't sure you can trust this vet now, and that may be true or not. If you believe that another vet will be smarter/better/read minds, you will be disappointed. My bet is that you will go into the new vet with all the information that you now have, and they can be starting from that point instead of the beginning. Do what you feel is best, and if you have lost faith in the vet, certainly find a different one.....but not for this one reason.

Good luck. I hope that Little Kitty gets well. Poor baby!

4. Yes I know that the internet can't diagnose--

It is just a way to get a wider range of experiences than people I happen to know. I don't know anyone with a cat with a sinus infection and how it can manifest. So whatever the cause, she has one now and we will treat it the same way--with antibiotics. I just feel like maybe the surgery was a waste of time and money.

One thing I do know for certain and that is that Kitty is a terrible patient with these vets--very frightened, to the point that the vet doesn't want to treat her unless she is under general anesthetic. Perhaps someone new would be able to work around having to do that, if a few stitches are required, for example.

Thanks for the good wishes.

He sneezes off and on and I thought it was because the AC in my condo was up too high, but most days he would go to the patio door and sit in the sun for at least an hour or so before climbing back on the couch, or going to his bowl and eat some of his food (which he's doing right now as I write this). When I took him to the vet last year I was told he has feline herpes, so he got treated for that and except for putting on a few pounds he's doing pretty good.

I'm sorry you're going through this, and I pray all goes well for your little one!

8. update

Sep 2012

She has gotten her appetite back today--not sure if she just feels better or if it is because I'm not giving her the Clavamox anymore, which was making her throw up. All week she'd hardly eaten a thing and that was making her feel weak.

She's still in her collar but tolerating it well. The wound is still draining some, but it isn't very big and the liquid is mostly clear, so "fingers crossed" it will keep on getting better from here on out.

Will still call the vet on Tuesday to update him and see if there is anything more we need to do. I would think another course of antibiotics would be a good idea, but we will see.

RavensChick: how did your kitty get treated for feline herpes? The only thing I've heard of is Lysine supplements. I bought some but so far Kitty has not wanted to try them.

She's doing well. The wound is healing and the collar came off today. She will be on Orbax for one month, but other than that, she's back to her normal kitty life.

Thanks to all for good vibes sent her way.
