Now, I'm not an expert on identifying kitten genders in such small creatures, but from what I saw, I am pretty sure this is a male. Of course, I was originally told Madoc was a female, so........
But, SHOULD I be right, this little boy will be permanently joining my family and his name shall be Arthur. Should I be wrong, then this little GIRL will be joining my family and her name shall be Bronwen. I've always had a thing for striped little tabby cats.

(21,360 posts)my grandma would turn the cat upside down and count the holes.
Some people claim female cats have 3 colors, but I found that to not be accurate.

(9,267 posts)99% chance its female.

(26,268 posts)I'll be taking them to the vet, shortly after I bring them in. All will be revealed, and I'll probably make an appointment for 'fixing' this one, even though it will be a while.
Along with male cats spraying, I DON'T want to deal with is a female cat in heat.
Fortunately, the boys were 'clipped' in time and there's been no unnecessary territorial marking.

(26,268 posts)The longer distance indicates a male. But, like I said, I'm no expert. Regardless, I'm set on adopting this sweetie, which is why I already decided on two names. Madoc was originally set to be named Maggie. But, when I got the 'news', the name Madoc just popped into my head. The vet laughed at how fast I came up with it.

(1,639 posts). . . It's not the presence of three colors but the combination of three specific colors in a pattern type that has something to do with the double X chromosome.

BTW, it is amazing how much science has been devoted to cat coat colors. There are scholarly discussions on the percentages of pure black cats versus those with a stray white hair or two. (The presence of white hairs saved black cats' lives during the Inquisition thus altering genetic ratios.) Decades ago, I read an article about the effect of WWII on cat coat pattern distribution in Eastern Europe. I wrote an abstract of the article for a school assignment and ended with a flippant comment, "Now we have something else to blame Hitler for", that might get me in hot water today.
Oh, and little Arthur is freakin' ADORABLE. I am allergic to cats and I want to rub his sweet furry form all over my face. Who needs oxygen?

(9,267 posts)Something about the gene for orange being sex-linked and you would see both black and orange on the same cat if its female. White, black, gray can be on any. Brown is fairly rare except on the Oriental breeds. Tortoiseshell is black and orange blotches, calico is tortoiseshell with white, both almost always female. One of my grandcats is a dilute calico - gray, orange and white.

(21,487 posts)orange, black, gray, with a little bit of white.
Her mother was a dilute calico, with patches of gray and light orange from her shoulders and flanks to her rump. The rest of her was white. The color patches were so symmetrical and alternating in color that they looked like a patchwork quilt draped over a white cat.
My little lady has gray and black stripes on her legs, neck, and tail, with streaks of orange here and there on her back, flanks and tail, a white section under her chin, white ticking on black hairs, and an orange blaze on her face. She got her name, Ember, from the orange-red streaks between coal black and ash gray stripes, like the embers of a fire. Fits her personally too, sometimes cozy and warm, sometimes flaring up into a blaze of action and spitfire independence.
I would post pics, but I lost them in a phone meltdown and they were not saved elsewhere. Besides, I had not yet learned how to post pics before I lost them.

(16,426 posts)I think this is a girl (because of the orange in her fur, as others have pointed out). But either way, this tiny cherub is a keeper!
P.S. I love the name Bronwyn, so I'm hoping she's a girl.

(111,277 posts)so I hope you picked up a little KMR, s/he is still too little to be completely weaned. That happens by 8 weeks.
As for the holes, it's often difficult to tell on the really tiny ones. Two holes is female, one hole plus a little dot on a lump is male, but sometimes the males have subtle lumps and big dots, so I've gotten it wrong once and she was a he.
Next week those ears will be big and on top of the head, the eyes will start to change color. The week after that is my favorite, when they run sideways and try to pounce, they're hysterically funny.

(26,268 posts)I first saw them 3 weeks ago, today, and they looked almost newborn, to my untrained eyes.
I've got the kitten play pen all set up in the guest room. They will be kept isolated from the boys until I get them to the vet. Which will happen shortly after I bring them in.
