Do you have problems with dog toenails?

My oldest son came home for Mothers Day and he knew I was having problems with our dog and his nails. Our dog is a big boy, close to 90 pounds and a rescue with a dark past but we got him before he was a year old, they think, so things have been slow but he is doing well except for this problem.

My son brought home this solution and strangely it worked, kind of but I can see it helping if we keep it up.

On FaceBook on a very old thread there is a woman who wrapped her head in some kind of cling wrap and covered her forehead with peanut butter. Her dog spent enough time licking it off that she was able to trim its nails. Our dog is not a sweet, compliant Golden Retriever like hers but I got all the fronts trimmed just slightly. Now my hair and face need a good wash but if he can tolerate this a few times we might be passed the biting.

Clever! I assume that it was the lady's head, not the dog's head wrapped in cling wrap? SWBTATTReg May 2022 #3

but I did! It IS creative, my husband wanted to get tranquillizers for this but he would never learn that way and nope, not going to do that to him. He was just being a spoiled child not mean.

Cheeze Whiz worked a little better, he must like it better.

It was hard to keep the wrap on the way my dog goes for it, nothing dainty about him at all. We ended up duct taping it around a ball cap. A football helmet with a chin strap would be ideal!

Last week I was out walking, and passed by a young boy walking a smallish dog. I nodded hello and kept going, when suddenly the dog jumped at me and I felt a sharp pain on my thigh - I thought I'd been bitten, and my sweat pants were torn. I looked more closely, didn't see teeth marks and concluded I'd been clawed instead - maybe the dog was just one of those overly-enthusiastic types - but it drew blood and caused a nasty bruise. Since I was able to find out that the dog was current on its rabies shots, I let it go and didn't worry about it any further. The injury is almost healed now. But if the dog had scratched a small child's face instead of an old lady's thigh the owner might have been sued. I hope the owners get those claws trimmed.

Our dogs nails get long and split. We have had to have one cut way back and that did mean he had to get knocked out for a bit. I have struggled with this for a while now, my arms are a mess of bruises. He does not really bite me but chews to get me to stop. The vet will not do it anymore because he just will not stop. I do not want someone trying to power him down, we have fixed most of those issues except for this. One person trying to force him will get bit badly and we will be back to having to deal with that. He is a good boy now almost all the time.

I am glad you are OK. That had to hurt a lot and when you think of all the crap in their claws, just ewwww.
