http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/politics/clout/chi-emanuel-to-unveil-new-chicago-gun-control-ordinance-20130110,0,6664130.storyMayor Rahm Emanuel today indicated he will put forward his own city gun control ordinance in the next few days after state lawmakers did not reach agreement on the divisive issue.
Emanuel refused to give details about what specifically his proposal will address. But he said he isn't willing to wait until state lawmakers take up gun control. Last month, a federal appeals court tossed out the state's longstanding ban on carrying concealed guns in public. The court gave the state six months to set up new rules.
During his remarks today, Emanuel hit on several of the firearms regulations he has said he would like to see in place at the state level since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in Connecticut.
"Waiting is not a strong suit of mine," Emanuel said when asked today about the General Assembly's failure to pass a proposed state ban on assault weapons. "First of all, I believe there's, I know there's a majority in the state, an overwhelming majority in the city for a ban on assault weapons, clips, and comprehensive background checks on all sales, wherever they take place, wherever the location may be. And there's also a majority in the legislature."

(6,185 posts)So called "assault weapons" are already banned.
No magazines over 10 rounds. (including my .22 Marlin Model 60)
No gun shows or gun stores in the city.
No mail order ammunition sales allowed.
All guns must be registered with the police.
Illinois already requires all sales go through an FFL with a background check.
And we still had 508 killed last year and 19 killed so far this year.
With the McDonald decision less than 2 years old, there's no way he can introduce a complete ban again.
I guess what he can do is write more big ass checks to the NRA, ISRA and SAF.
But I do note that he is not giving up his armed 24/7 security for himself or his family at their school to set an example.

(35 posts)Gun laws in the US yet also leads in gun violence, how will passing more gun laws help to fix that?

Most of the USA is a fucking supermarket of weapons.

(38,311 posts)In my part of the country owning a gun increases the odds someone will break into your house. That's the only thing most people have worth stealing. The gangs have Xboxes and new televisions. They buy them at Best Buy like the rest of us. But if the gangs know you have guns they'll wait until you go to work, crack open your garage door, drive a truck or van in, close the door, take your guns, gun safe and all, and drive away when no one is looking. Or maybe some fourteen year old will crawl through your bathroom window and take the gun you keep in your nightstand..
We don't have gun stores here because selling guns is too dangerous. WalMart doesn't sell guns because too many guns they lost or sold ended up in the hands of gangsters.
Most of the guns on the street, held by criminals, were purchased legally at some point.
The USA needs an aggressive program to get guns out of the hands of fools and criminals.

(38,311 posts)Some of my neighbors are weird, or maybe I'm the weird one.
My favorite weird neighbor has surveillance cameras all over his house. He probably has guns too. He freaked out one day when the neighbor across the street shot her boyfriend in the leg. I went outside and all I saw was her naked boyfriend with his bloody leg hiding behind a fire truck with the police and fire fighters. I couldn't leave to meet with a client because the street was blocked. It took the police more than an hour to talk angry girlfriend out of her house. Two days later our weird neighbor put up his cameras. Girlfriend and boyfriend moved away shortly after that, I hope not together.
Our street is pretty safe. I work at home and look out the window often. I've also got a few neighbors who are law enforcement and military who don't work ordinary hours. They keep an eye out too.
Neighborhood kids see me out gardening or working on my cars. We talk. I know some of them belong to gangs or are associated with gangs, but so do the police.
I still get a lot of gang graffiti on my back wall because I can't go out every time I hear the dogs bark. Sometimes the dogs are just barking at the police sirens, or maybe raccoons or possums, or maybe nothing.
City crews paint over the graffiti every couple of months, but sometimes it gets bad before they come around so I do it. I once had some gang kids who were probably armed challenge me for that. But I assumed my urban teacher persona (very hard won in Los Angeles) and we all shrugged it off. It's just paint.
I've never been in a situation where me having a gun would have made anything better and I've been in some pretty rough situations, some involving gunfire.

(17,502 posts)Although I did live in an inner city for a couple of years during my time serving the Empire. I grew up in a small town and now live in kind of the sticks. My wife, being from Detroit and Tampa Bay, thinks it way out in the country. Since I'm either in Mayberry, a campus, or the sticks, the only time I carry a gun is going to the range or when I'm sticking it to the factory farm system.
