By Michael B. Marois - Jan 23, 2014
Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. (SWHC) said it will stop selling new versions of semiautomatic pistols in California because of a law requiring the weapons to stamp identifying information onto bullet casings when the guns are fired.
The law, signed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2007, requires that new or updated semiautomatic handgun models be equipped to imprint the make, model and serial number of the gun on each cartridge case, using a technique known as microstamping.
Californias firearms laws are among the most restrictive in the U.S. The state passed the nations first assault-weapon ban in 1989. Microstamping, intended to aid police in solving crimes, is opposed by gun-rights advocates who say the additional cost penalizes lawful gun owners.
In a statement, Smith & Wesson, based in Springfield, Massachusetts, said the technology is unreliable, serves no safety purpose, is cost prohibitive and, most importantly, is not proven to aid in preventing or solving crimes.
The provision was supposed to take effect in 2010. It was delayed until the state attorney generals office in May determined that microstamping technology was available manufacturers unrestricted by patents, a condition of the bill when it was enacted. A gun-rights group, the Calguns Foundation, paid to extend the existing patent in an attempt to forestall the law.

(905 posts)Is that this law only applies to joe citizen, the police are exempt. Could somebody give me a logical reason why that should be.

(17,493 posts)smuggled in from other states. Often there is an arms race between the police and the bad guys. At one time police officers carried revolvers and found themselves out gunned by the criminal element who were using semi-automatic pistol with high capacity magazines.
It would be unfair to expect the police to use outdated technology to fight crime.

(905 posts)And because of this police don't have to eh. What was the purpose of this law again? Because so far all I see it doing is punishing law abiding citizens.

(17,493 posts)are not fond of semi-automatic firearms and feel they should do their best to curtail the civilian ownership of these weapons.

(15,333 posts)...this is security theater in action. So, yes, this is purely an attempt to restrict
civilian ownership of semi-automatic firearms.

Dirty Harry's Model 29: America's Shooting Star
by Rick Hacker
July 23, 2013
Out of production and somewhat obscure, the Smith & Wesson Model 29 was once well known only to serious big-bore handgunners. Then in 1971, it became one of the most famous and desirable handguns of all time. Do you know why? Well, do ya?
***snip***
Such was not the case with Dirty Harry in 1971, starring Clint Eastwood, for the Smith & Wesson Model 29 that he packed in a Bucheimer-Clark shoulder holster and that was interwoven into his movie character, Inspector Harry Callahan. Who can forget those taunting, haunting words uttered by Eastwood as he squinted down that 6½-inch barrel aimed at actor Albert Poppy Popwell:
I know what youre thinking. Did he fire six shots or only five? Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, youve got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?
What erupted immediately after that wasnt the roar of a .44 Mag., but a frenzied public clamoring for an S&W Model 29which, at that time, really was the most powerful commercially made handgun in the world. The sudden nationwide desire to own a .44 Mag. took S&W by surprise, as prior to the release of Dirty Harry, demand for the bulky, hard-recoiling handgun had fallen so low that the Model 29though still catalogedwas out of production. Then, overnight the Model 29 was on everybodys most wanted list. As a result, Model 29s were selling for as much as three times their suggested retail price of $194when they could be found.

or 'Inshallah'?

(17,502 posts)since most of these have a law enforcement exemption. As others pointed out, he carried a revolver.

(15,333 posts)We're getting close to the thread being LaPierred* as it is.
*Refers to my variant on Godwin's Law:
"As a DU discussion of guns goes on, the probability that a statement that the
NRA has something to do with it will appear approaches 1, even if they have nothing to do with it."
