When it comes to common-sense gun laws, moms will never give up

When I launched Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, I understood I would encounter opposition from those who took issue with my view – the same held by most gun owners – that firearm safety and responsibility go hand-in-hand with our Second Amendment rights.

I knew that sometimes these debates would get heated. In fact, I’ve always welcomed and embraced debate. That said, I’ve also always vowed to remain civil and to avoid cruel, ad hominem attacks in my work as a gun violence prevention advocate.

Unfortunately, as several recent incidents chronicled in Mother Jones make clear, a number of people on the extreme other side of this debate have shown they have no interest in adhering to a similar pledge.

In recent months, the vitriol coming from the other side has reached new levels of concern.

Lets have a discussion. I understand if you are scared but we do not bite in here. You do seem to like this group as it is your favorite.

What "other side" is full of vitriol? Would that be the baby-murdering, gun-humping, terrorist racist side?

7. Because "gun-humper"

is a pejorative, broad brushed, smear attack to describe all gun owners and does nothing to further the discussion of how to best address the criminal misuse of firearms or reckless negligence of some gun owners.

Yes, I hate the term gun-humper but I also don't like when people fake outrage over something they created, i.e. vitriol.

The fact that you have no contributions to the issue except to be as inflammatory as possible without contributing only proves the point.

in passing much needed improvements to our national gun laws in the long run.

I'm not totally sure what laws they will push for. Their web site did not provide me with much information.

WHAT IS GUN SENSE?
Gun Sense is the simple idea that we can do more to keep our families and communities safe from gun violence. It’s the belief that we, as Americans don’t have to tolerate 31,000 deaths from gun violence every year.

If you believe that felons and domestic abusers shouldn’t have access to guns; if you think guns don’t belong in places like churches, schools and playgrounds; If you think our elected officials should be as passionate about the safety of our communities as they are about the right to bear arms: You have Gun Sense.

I'm not sure that advocating for gun free zones indicates you have gun sense as many tragic massacres do occur in gun free zones. In my opinion any gun free zone that is attended by a number of people should have trained and armed security personnel in the facility. For example a "security guard" was largely responsible for stopping a shooter in the New Life Church in Colorado.

New Life Church (Colorado Springs, Colorado)

***snip***

On December 9, 2007, a gunman opened fire in the New Life Church, striking four people and killing two, sisters Rachel and Stephanie Works; their father David Works was one of the individuals injured. Jeanne Assam, a church security volunteer, shot and wounded the gunman who then killed himself.[10]

Still I feel that if this group concentrates mainly pushing legislation that will help insure that only honest, responsible and sane people can purchase and own firearms they can make a big difference.

If they follow the lead of other gun control groups and push for bans on assault weapons and the capacity of magazines in such weapons they will likely have little success.

Of course, that would first require them getting educated so that they have Common Sense.
