The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
A North Georgia judge is being investigated for pulling out a handgun during a hearing this week as a woman testified about being an assault victim.
Judge David E. Barrett.
Lumpkin County Superior Court Judge David E. Barrett pulled out his pistol Wednesday not in anger, but out of frustration and to make "a poor rhetorical point," District Attorney Jeff Langley said Saturday. Langley, who was in the courtroom when it happened, said the Judicial Qualifications Commission has launched an investigation of the judge.
"It was totally inappropriate conduct for a courtroom," Langley said. The district attorney said that he approached the bench after Barrett pulled out his gun and told the judge to put his pistol away. The judge did so and the hearing continued, Langley said.
Barrett, chief judge of the Enotah Judicial Circuit, did not immediately respond to emails or to phone calls left at his office Saturday. Under Georgia law, judges are allowed to carry a concealed weapon on the bench, but it is a crime to point a pistol at another person when there is no justification to do so.

(1,534 posts)I've always wondered what some people are compensating for when they rush to make silly assumptions about others.
Lack of intellect, perhaps?
Of all of the good, bad, or just plain stupid reasons to carry or (illegally) brandish a gun, "compensating for inadequacies" probably does not make the top 100.

(7,042 posts)I'm sure there was no rush to judgment on your part from the single post you responded to. After all, you would never make a silly assumption about someone's intellect from a single post. You are way too smart for that, aren't you?
Unlike others, I certainly don't wonder why some people would make a silly top 100 reason list to brandish a gun.
But if I were to make such a list, 'compensating for inadequacies' is number one. Stupidity is number two. Then again, that's just my opinion. I'm sure you could come up with 98 more.

(1,534 posts)Which inadequacies was my sis-in-law compensating for when she decided that she needed one of my pistols more than I do? I think she fits every stereotype of someone you would think would be on your side. (Minority, young mom, college grad, R.N.)
Is she inadequate, or merely stupid?

(7,042 posts)You know her better than I. There are at least a 100 reasons why people do silly things.

(3,291 posts)In many states there are special "rules" for judges giving them extra special privlidges concerning "toting" while at work or in public.
So this is actually another example of a government employee abusing private citizens with a firearm.

"Barrett told the woman she was "killing her case" and pulled out his gun and, feigning to offer it to her, said, "You might as well shoot your lawyer," Langley said."
