City ignores recommendation, allows guns throughout parks (North Carolina)

A new state law that allows the use of concealed handgun permits in public parks still permits local governments to ban the weapons in specific areas, such as playgrounds.

But Gastonia City Council members opted not to take advantage of that exemption this week, out of concerns that it would unfairly infringe upon responsible permit holders. Their decision will now allow people with concealed weapon permits to bring their handguns anywhere in a Gastonia park or greenway, including athletic fields, courts, playgrounds, swimming pools and other recreational areas.

But Councilman Jim Gallagher was one of the six who favored a hands-off approach from government control. People with concealed weapon permits have proven themselves trustworthy and responsible, and imposing any restriction on them is unfair and unnecessary, he said.

“This is a slippery slope and it’s just going to go downhill,” Gallagher said of potential restrictions. “The second amendment is clear. Our founding fathers wanted us to protect ourselves.”

Not all states publish their CCW conviction data, but of the ones who do, the picture is very clear: CCW permit holders are hardly ever involved in any kind of crime, let alone firearm-related crime.

A CCW permit holder is many times less likely to be involved in any kind of crime than any other random person you will meet in public.

Statistically, you would be far safer surrounded entirely by CCW permit holders than random people of the public.
