A clerk was shot and killed in a West Side gas station robbery about two hours before his shift was to end, according to police and the man's family.
Baker Farhat, of the 7800 block of South Rutherford Avenue in Burbank, was pronounced dead on the scene at 4:25 a.m. via telemetry from John H. Stroger Jr., Hospital of Cook County, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Farhat, in his 30s, was shot about 4:10 a.m. inside a Marathon gas station between Warren Avenue and Washington Boulevard on Homan Avenue, just across the street from Garfield Park.

According to a preliminary police report, a female witness told police that a gunman, who was with at least one other person, displayed a blue-steel semiautomatic pistol and demanded money from Farhat. Farhat gave the gunman money from the cash register and after saying, "I don't have anymore," was fatally shot in the head.

"Simply give them what they want and you'll be ok". Isn't that what we hear?

(4,869 posts)That any gas station open 24 hours should be required to have bullet proof glass. Too many people get shot over their 8 dollar an hour job because the station owner is too cheap.

(4,941 posts)Ever see videos of bad guys that bust into a store with a gun and hightail it out of there when one is pulled on them?
Bad guys don't want to die. They'll simply go find easier prey.

That's something a can of beans just won't accomplish.

Your OP is like many of the gunner posts that deal in absolutes that don't exit. For the umpteenth time, nobody wants to take your frigging guns away!

(4,941 posts)A gun MAY have given the clerk a fighting chance. Maybe not.
The point is, we hear anti's all the time say, "Simply give them what they want and they'll leave you alone".
This proves that isn't true.

(11,417 posts)People want to try to reduce gun violence. No one has a perfect method to do that but no sensible or reasonable plan includes taking guns away by the anti's.

It really rubs me the wrong way but I think that is your intention. Also your cutesy words are not debate. Insult me if you want. I promise I will not react so the jury won't get me again like they did twice on Sunday.

(32,746 posts)Because "they" always say that, perhaps you could post where a few people on Du said it. Because, "they" ALWAYS say it, about 10 to 20 examples would work for EVERYONE. Or, do you just make this shit up? Or are all of your horse made of straw?

The majority believe the clerk should not have been armed...
Absolutes????

First reply to a very radical, heavily favoring CG proposal I floated to see what 'might' be considered reasonable.
I could find many 'ban them all' posts in GD but we are not welcome there any more not being good liberals or Democrats and all that

(11,417 posts)I think that that meme is so important to you that to take it away may be as bad as taking your gun away.
There is no legislative body in the whole United States of America proposing legislation to take your guns away.
DUers can't take you guns away.

(18,883 posts)the voters who can support those who wish to take them away...
and many of them favor a ban so something so close as to make no difference.

(11,417 posts)I can't name one.
I think if we could get over that meme maybe we could have a sensible debate. Even a majority of NRA members are in favor of some restrictions. That is what I heard the day before President Obama's words on the subject this week.
Even in Colorado he said there would be no anti gun legislation coming.
He said that AK47'should be used in war and not on the streets.

(609 posts)Peter Shields, founder of Handgun Control Inc. was quoted in the New Yorker Magazine, June 26, 1976, with what frankly crystallizes the alleged paranoia many of us have for preserving the Second Amendment. "We'll take one step at a time, and the first is necessarily ... given the political realities ... very modest. We'll have to start working again to strengthen the law, and then again to strengthen the next law and again and again. Our ultimate goal, total control of handguns, is going to take time. The first problem is to make possession of all handguns and ammunition (with a few exceptions) totally illegal."
DIANE FEINSTEIN (California Senator, author of "Feinstein Amendment" which became the 94 gun ban): "If I could have gotten 51 votes in the Senate of the United States for an outright ban, picking up every one of them
Mr. and Mrs. America, turn em all in, I would have done it." (60 Minutes episode, CBS) - What is interesting about this one is that Diane Feinstein has a concealed weapons permit. "one law for thee, another for me". Apparently her life is more important than anyone else's.
Janet Reno - "Waiting periods are only a step. Registration is only a step. The prohibition of private firearms is the goal."
Something to think about next time you hear that "No one is coming to take your guns away, relax.."

(11,417 posts)No government or legislative body has a proposal to take your gun away. The SCOTUS says there may be sensible restrictions but they have to be laws in place and a case brought before them and then they will decide each one on a case by case basis.
Anyone in a legislative body proposing a gun ban today is committing political suicide.

(32,746 posts)I recently worked from 10 at night until six in the morning by my self at a gas station. I was never robbed, but the lady that also worked, the nights I didn't was. She never saw a gun and just gave the girl some money.
I wrote a long letter to management with diagrams and suggestions to foil another attempt. The main suggestion was for a flood light in the back. That is where the robber came from and left. After 2 AM it was and still is totally dark. The front and both sides are pretty well lit with lots of traffic. Management told me they couldn't afford a light. They couldn't afford better resolution cameras or a panic button to lock the doors if you saw a masked person coming in. This is a very busy store that raked in over 5 grand every night on my shift.
2 workers would have been enough to stop that crime. Not sure if being armed would or wouldn't work. I'm sure better security would.
I would suggest better security over being armed any day. I don't want to shoot and kill anyone and the best way to stop that is to keep the place from being robbed in the first place. But, if like you the only tool you have is a hammer, every thing looks like a nail.
