Associated Press= NEW YORK (AP) Ten days after the Colorado movie theater massacre, federal lawmakers introduced a bill that would effectively ban people like suspect James Holmes from buying thousands of rounds of ammunition by mail or online.
"It's time to close the loophole that's allowing killers deranged, insane and even terrorists to buy ammunition online," said U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey.
He was joined Monday on the steps of City Hall in Manhattan by U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy of New York to announce the Stop Online Ammunition Sales Act.

Lautenberg said he and McCarthy, both Democrats, were "on a mission": to ensure the safety of all Americans by passing legislation that would close loopholes in gun laws allowing people like the suspect in the Aurora, Colo., shootings "to anonymously stockpile for mass murder."

(18,479 posts)It's reassuring to know that our legislators are hard at work wasting time and money on restrictions that serve no useful purpose.

(653 posts)By god, Frank Lautenberg has discovered another LOOPHOLE!!!!!.
Why is it , that these lawmakers who want nothing more than to limit, or eradicate the rights of every American, can always find some regular mundane piece of business and somehow turn it into a LOOPHOLE?

(768 posts)that it would be inaccurate to say that his actions w/regard to gun restriction caused the defeat, since there would be multiple factors at play.
I do believe that it would be accurate to assert that but for his bad decisions since '08 re. firearms and previous statements he'd likely have won.
While I don't believe that Republicons are celebrating the Aurora shooting, I certainly believe that they are celebrating our response to it.
I'm feeling more distressed by the day as the shrill, uninformed BS ushers forth from our side - from citizens and politicians alike.

(146 posts)So since Holmes would have been unable under this legislation to purchase ammo online, he would have gone to any gun store and purchased 6,000 rounds without question or I.D. (unless they doubted his age)
I don't know about you, but my "increased feeling of safety" meter just went to warm and fuzzy. Thanks NJ lawmakers

(15,396 posts)It's not "massive" amounts of ammo how many people have fired more than 100 rounds in a spree killing?
So what are they really worried about when they feel the need to limit your ammo?

(146 posts)to appear to be "doing something" without actually accomplishing anything. Its called theater

(18,479 posts)If all of Congress is in a room with James Holmes who has a gun, How many rounds of ammo will they vote to let him have? I'm guessing the number will be less than 535.
Next: How many guns and rounds of ammo will they allow each other to have while being sequestered with Mr Holmes and his arms? IMHO, that would be a good place to start for everyone.

(6,268 posts)The killer fired about 100 rounds.. (?) That's only a few boxes of cheap ammo easily avaibale @ ny gun shop or Walmart in the nation. You don't need internet sales to get that, especially when you consider he got his guns from a local gunshop.
The thought that this weak bill could have prevented this tradgedy indicates Lautenberg must have an IQ of about 75.

(49,445 posts)He fired a few shots from the AR-15 until the gun jammed, then he emptied the shotgun (no more than 8 rounds) and a Glock handgun.
So he fired about 30 from the AR-15, 8 from the shotgun, and 15 from the Glock. Total: 53.
Sorry, guys, but rifle ammo comes in boxes of 20 rounds each, buckshot in 5-shell boxes, and handgun ammo in boxes of between 20 and 50.
Buying 2 boxes of rifle ammo, 2 boxes of buckshot, and a box of handgun ammo wouldn't even be a blip on the radar.
You don't need massive quantities of ammo to perform a mass shooting.
Our legislators are obsessing over stockpiles of ammunition when the last time there actually was a sustained siege against law enforcement was Waco and the Branch Davidians. It's not an issue. The people stock up are either end-of-the-world fanatics, at which point I'd rather they spend their money stockpiling ammo than donating to Republicans or their think tanks for their church; or they're sport shooters buying in bulk.
