Gun Control & RKBA

http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Boulder-libraries-to-allow-guns-4019810.phpThe Boulder Public Library Commission gave unanimous approval on Wednesday to the rule change after reviewing a state Supreme Court ruling telling state universities they could not ban concealed-weapon permit holders from bringing guns on campus. The court ruled earlier this year that state lawmakers only provided a few exceptions to the concealed weapons law, and neither of those organizations are among them.
According to the Boulder Daily Camera (http://tinyurl.com/abtnka6 ), the new policy still has to be approved by city officials.
Another small advance for gun rights. Gun controllers will now be terrified to go to a Boulder library and will predict noise and mayhem in the lobbies. After a year nothing will have happened and everybody will have forgotten about it.

(12,072 posts)What makes a library different that such things happen there and not at mall parking lots?

(15,374 posts)Doesn't seem to happen here in Tucson. And I open carry.

(5 posts)If a licensed concealed handgun owner carries into a full library and quietly sits and reads a book as one does in a library and then... BOOM! The door flies open, a wacko comes in pointing his gun at people, the concealed handgun owner will be able to kill his ass before there's another reinactment of the batman movie killing.
You see, LICENSED concealed handgun owners go through an extensive background check and all have spotless records. They're probably the safest and most stable people to be around and are particular in that they have taken the extra measure to ensure their own safety as well as the safety of the people around them. So there.
The cops won't save you. Your own protection is YOUR own responsibility. Please understand that.
Here in Tulsa a LICENSED concealed handgun owner at the back of a Homeland (supermarket) check out line pulled his piece and began firing at two armed robbers.
May have hit one. Good thing the robbers were on their way out the door and kept on going rather than returning fire. The innocents nailed by the cross fire would have been dead, whether shot by the robbers, or by the LICENSED guy who should have kept his gun holstered.
Note also that not only are your odds of being killed with a gun very low in the UK where they do control guns, your odds of being any kind of homicide victim are also much lower.

(17,502 posts)BTW, it isn't that hard to buy a pistol or submachine gun in the UK, just see your local drug connection.

Chance of dying by firearm in the US, 10.27 per 100,000
UK? .46

(17,502 posts)unless you are part of the drug trade your chances are as slim as they are in UK.

BTW, does that number include suicides? It does. Most of them are suicides. Also, the UK is not on the list. You used the number for England and Wales. ULSTER and Scotland are listed separately. Those four jurisdictions combined make up the UK.

(12,072 posts)I know of only one case in which a CCWer hit an innocent, but there are bunches of cases of CCWers shooting felons during a crime.
You are letting your imagination run away with you.
rablrouzer
(66 posts)The safest thing was to let the already fleeing felons do just that.
It was only money.
Had they returned fire at the "loose" cannon, the other people in line would have been in the line---of fire.
petronius
(26,602 posts)you've provided an example that was not in a library, and where the bad outcome did not occur?
I will certainly weigh that accordingly, as I consider whether there is any significant cause for concern here...
GreenStormCloud
(12,072 posts)That is simply part of your imagination. All CCW classes that I am aware of teach to let fleeing crooks go, get a good description, report it to the police. The reason for carrying a gun is survival, not to play wannabe cop.
If it is only money, indeed let the felons go. But sometimes they want more than money. Sometimes they want to shoot somebody to establish their street creds as being bad ass. Sometimes they don't want to leave witness. Sometimes they just enjoy killing. You have to read each situation. There are no guarantees. You can't guarantee that if a person cooperates completely with the thug that they will live.
The numerous cases I am aware of the criminals were not fleeing when the CCWer engaged them. In fact, I have posted this thread of a CCWer in Detroit stopping robbers who had already opened fire before he drew his gun. His action stopped their shooting. http://www.democraticunderground.com/117285654

And even though it won't be anywhere near a public library people will blame this law.
