Journalist Andrea Mitchell on fighting to cover big stories
NBC News’ Andrea Mitchell, who’s celebrating her 40th anniversary with the network, has had to fight to cover big stories.
Mitchell recounted at a 92nd Street Y talk that after repeatedly being denied the chance to cover the nuclear-reactor accident at the Three Mile Island plant in 1979 — despite being the network’s energy reporter — she marched into the bureau chief’s office and asked for an explanation.
“He said, ‘Because you’re of child-bearing age, I don’t want to expose you to radiation.’?
I said, ‘Has it ever occurred to you that men’s balls are as vulnerable to radiation as women’s ovaries?’”
Mitchell was assigned the next day.
