US developing plans to train Iraqis in Jordan

AP foreign, Thursday January 23 2014

LOLITA C. BALDOR

Associated Press= WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials are developing plans to use a small number of U.S. special operations forces in Jordan to train Iraqi troops as part of a broader effort to help Iraq fight the growing al-Qaida threat within its borders.

A senior defense official says there has been no official request from Iraq yet for that training. The official was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly so spoke on condition of anonymity.

U.S. and Iraqi officials are talking about how it would be done. A formal request from Baghdad will likely follow. Iraq has asked for U.S. assistance in recent months.

The training may not begin until the summer. Jordan said Sunday it would host the training after al-Qaida militants seized control of two towns in Iraq's contested Anbar province.
