US carrier's exit from Gulf sparks concern as Russian ships enter to join Syria fight
The US government has withdrawn its nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt from the Persian Gulf just as Russian warships have entered the Gulf to join in the Russian air assault on enemy targets in Syria.
This marked the first time that the US would be left with no carrier in the Gulf since 2007, officials said.
US officials said the move to pull the USS Theodore Roosevelt out of the Persian Gulf was planned as early as July, adding that the ship was scheduled to undergo maintenance. The ship is home to about 5,000 service members and 65 combat planes, according to NBC News.
Its absence in the region worries some US Navy officials, saying this could potentially hamstring US military operations in Iraq and Syria.

(34,661 posts)Let Mr. Obama handle this, something tells us there is a U.S. and Russia thing about to happen were exhausted assets are being replaced and a new direction is about to happen. Watch for some major shake up coming in the Pentagon. Mr. Kerry has a Ace up his sleeve on this. Iran and the Saudi's are the players. Watch for McCain or Little Lindsey to blow their tops soon.

(34,661 posts)a couple Countries. As suspected, things in Afghanistan got out of someones control and now we have at least five thousand troops held hostage much like Korea. This whole Mid East thing is the Saudi's and the Iranians and their respective Religions. Is this why the U.S. did the big Oil Drilling ramp up? The smart people had this thought out years ago and it is a clean up of the Neo-Con screw up.

(90,061 posts)It's hard to tell out here in TV-land, and while there may be smart people in charge and about to set things rigbt, that doesn't seem like the way to bet.
On the other hand, I'm not much inclined to go after Obama about it. More because I know how the US goverment works than because I have an opinion about what he is up to, or not.
You might say that I have confidence that the future course of events will make matters clear in due course. And in the meantime it seems wise to get that carrier out of the gulf before the loonies go apeshit on each other.

(90,061 posts)Washington: US President Barack Obama on Friday warned Russia they could not "bomb their way" to a peaceful solution in Syria, reiterating his view that propping up President Bashar al-Assad will fail.
Speaking after US and Russian militaries reached a tentative deal to prevent mid-air clashes over Syria, Obama said there had been "no meeting of the minds in terms of strategy."
"They are not going to be able to bomb their way to a peaceful situation inside of Syria," Obama told a joint press conference with visiting South Korean President Park Geun-Hye.
His comments come as Russia steps up its bombing campaign in support of Assad and US officials say as many as 2,000 Iranian and Iranian-backed forces are helping regime troops in an offensive near Aleppo.

NAVAL STATION NORFOLK, Va. More than 4,000 sailors and Marines got underway Tuesday morning after a three-day delay caused by Hurricane Joaquin.
The Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group, with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Group embarked, deployed on a seven-month float to provide maritime and theater security, as well as crisis response in the 5th and 6th fleets. The blue-green team will be aboard the amphibious assault ship Kearsarge and amphibious transport dock Arlington out of Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, and the dock landing ship Oak Hill out of Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek/Fort Story. The MEU is based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
The blue/green team is "trained well and ready to execute," Capt. A.P. Bennett, ARG commodore, said.
While Bennett would give no specifics on training or potential missions, there is no doubt Syria is on everyone's radar. Russian marines have established their presence in the embattled nation and have been joined by Chinese and Iranian marines. Russian surface warships from the Black Sea have also relocated to the eastern Mediterranean to protect fighter jets conducting airstrikes.
