5. It's probably more accurate to say his book *reinterprets* Christmas traditions.

Many Christmas traditions are not based on anything in the Bible, they just sprang up later from folklore. It's also possible to reinterpret stuff in the Bible to have a different meaning than what's commonly accepted.

7. I heard something similar.

Jesus was supposed to have been born in the spring, not right after winter begins. And the early Church, competing with the pagan festivals of the winter solstice, moved the holiday (holy day) of celebrating the birth of Jesus closer to the Solstice. And the Church also adopted the symbols of the pagans' celebration such as the evergreen tree, lights, festivals, holly, etc.

9. How sad that the birth of Jesus has become a consumers tradition to buy stuff. I find

it to get harder and harder to celebrate christmas as christ's birth. I think of it has a holiday for children and a get together for family. I make sure we have a good home cooked meal and try to be together.

10. Agreed. Part of me wonders how much of the stuff bought is actually given as gifts as

opposed to, say, keeping the flat screen TV for one's own living room.

11. Well I have to say a couple of years ago we did buy my son and his wife a flat screen tv for

the living room. But this year they aren't getting anything but a good home made meal. I usually have my husband who helps me clean up. I kinda of get upset because my son and his wife don't even offer to clean up. It never mattered if we were at my mother's home or my in-laws home when she did all the cooking we made sure we washed the dishes and put them away and left the kitchen clean. My daughter-in-law isn't like that. I don't ask because I feel she should do it without asking. So I decided I'll use plastic paper plates so I'd have less to clean. I usually clean pots and pans as I go along. My husband usually does the washing of the dishes but he had to go to work later and I wanted him to rest up. He is always there so you do what you have to do. Thank goodness we only had the immediate family (5 people).
