Anti-intellectualism. Piggybacking on the first point, the current culture of anti-intellectualism doesnt encourage most White people (and Americans at large) to actually investigate things they are for" or against." Its much simpler to decide to be for" anything shaped by a legacy of White supremacy and White privilege and against anything that appears to be contrary to the former. Whites are used to being a baseline," the norm," or not considered a group at all, but those whom other groups are compared to. Sociopolitically, many Whites are having a day of reckoning" moment by even being classified as a group," or a race" as Tom Scocca pointed out so well in a recent article about Romneys overwhelming support from Whites. These factors contribute to the resistance to affirmative action.
Ahistorical views on race. If a White person takes the "why isnt there a White history month" and "why isnt there a White Entertainment Television station" stances on Whites and the media, it can be safely assumed that they are either uneducated or being willfully ignorant about the role of race in America and why certain spaces exist for Black people amidst the media, public discourse and culture itself. By pretending that the tide of history has no racial element, they can then infer that if everyone is equal" (as if being equal means being treated equally) Black people are unfairly" getting goodies" through affirmative action. This also ignores the fact that even with said theoretical "goodies," unemployment, health care, finances, real estate, and more is markedly worse for Black people (and other people of colour) versus White. The latter is written off as Black character failures" in the ever so common victim blaming ideologies such as American exceptionalism" and even patriotism" at times. This is where LIES about "poverty culture" come about as a way to praise greed, wealth and Whiteness and demonize suffering, poverty and Blackness.

(25,699 posts)Best way to fix it? Change the channel to BET and make them watch an hour of the programming and commercials on it, then ask, "Think that's doing black people any favors, you knucklehead?"
Then point out BET is owned by this guy:

(24,544 posts)And "why is there is no WHITE Entertainment television" whines. You can tell that someone is dumber than a box of hammers when they make these types of idiotic comments as well as absolutely blind to their own privilege.

(4,003 posts)"Why don't we have a white history month?" That's my all time favorite.

(25,699 posts)Since in schools at least (where most people encounter the concept for the longest) it's taught about African-American interactions with white American society, told from a white perspective, with a strong focus on whites "granting" franchise to blacks. Africa is rarely on the radar and is usually a story of colonialism again told from white sources where it appears. The Caribbean and Latin America aren't even on the radar; You don't learn about Toussaint Louverture, for damn sure! US history through black eyes is rarely taught, if ever, and the notion that black Americans have any amount of history that isn't completely encapsulated by white history is just utterly foreign.

(24,544 posts)Now you're getting to the meat of the matter. Why so many black women would have rather had their eyes gouged than watch "The Help."

(82,383 posts)it was amazing the lengths they went to. I had them doing research on the Miss America pageant, until they found a black contestant. Like one black contestant in decades made the whole thing equal from its beginning. It was getting pretty hilarious.

(10,893 posts)I think Jeantel was poorly-vetted. The prosecution should have did a better job telling her what to say and what not to. The part where she mentioned Trayvon calling George Zimmerman a "creepy ass cracker" wasn't really necessary, and it might hurt their side's case IMO because the media is likely going to be more focused on the "cracker" part and imply that Trayvon was racist. All of this could divert from the gist of what he was saying, which was that a creepy man was stalking him.

(135,425 posts)I took the "creepyass cracker" thing for what it was, and I think the important word there was creepyass, not cracker.
I also thought the "cursive humiliation" was unnecessary. And the picture his kid posted with the ice cream cones? Well, I guess what I thought about that, er, creepyass lawyer--and I don't care about his denials--was the case. The apple never falls far, after all.

(1,989 posts)I wish she could have been more helpful. But, I really don't think there was anything she could have done that would have made up for what was considered her deficits. I wanted her to speak more loudly. But, honestly...Zimmerman shot an unarmed teenager. I just don't need much more proof than that. For some people, you can't give them enough proof.

(27,275 posts)just before the trial. why in the hell didn't the prosecutors mention THAT? i agree with an article i read about her that was written by a black women. she said the entire white establishment, including the prosecution, had absolutely no idea how to deal with that poor, black, female, teenager. i mean really...why didn't they mention the surgery? or the fact that English was not her first, or second, or third language? the prosecution didn't do enough to humanize her, and the defense did a great job dehumanizing her.

(7 posts)I'm a white man and I support Affirmative Action. The statistics still show that only 14% of blacks graduate college, but over 35% of whites do. I completely understand the "whining white man." I live in Mississippi and the conservatives are extremely racist and hypocritical. These are the people who freely use slurs and bigoted remarks. When discussing this, they said that Affirmative Action is racist and that the educational system should be colorblind. Then when I asked them about racial profiling, guess what? They support it whole-heartedly. Hypocrites.
