Notre Dame joins ACC...all sports except football...

Notre Dame will join the Atlantic Coast Conference as a full member with the exception of football, but will play five football games annually against ACC teams.

"We have monitored the changing conference landscape for many months and have concluded that moving to the ACC is the best course of action for us," said Jack Swarbrick, Notre Dame vice president and director of athletics, in a statement released by the conference. "We are able to maintain our historic independence in football, join in the ACC's non-BCS bowl package, and provide a new and extremely competitive home for our other sports."

The ACC does not offer hockey, so it is presumed that Notre Dame will go through with its planned move to Hockey East in that sport.

The Irish will join the ACC as soon as it can exit the Big East. The Big East currently requires members to provide 27 months notice to exit although West Virginia, Pittsburgh and Syracuse were able to leave earlier by paying a higher exit fee.

I ASSUME women's sports is going, but I could be wrong...if so, then UCONN will have no competition in basketball at all.

I hope they can work out so they always play at least two out of Michigan, MSU, USC, and Navy every year. As a Marylander, I look forward to being able to go to a ND game at College Park, though.

Basketball is going to be insane though. We'll now have a true super-conference with Duke, UNC, Syracuse, Pitt, and ND all playing each other.

They go from being the 3rd-4th best team in the ACC to the 6th or 7th with 'Cuse, Pitt, and ND joining.

Women's Basketball should be fun though, as both MD and ND are usually 1 or 2 in the country. Now they get to face each other 4 times a year.

Staying Independent rather than the ACC is the better move. Playing USC, Michigan State, Michigan, Stanford, Purdue, Stanford and maybe others every year is probably a tougher schedule they would have than they would in the ACC, except maybe if they were in the same division as Virginia Tech.
