though McCutchen's only hit last night was a walk off...staving off the Pirates 20th consecutive losing season for at least one more day.

We just don't know who will be the Division champs and who will be the Wild Cards.

7. The Angels are above the Devils

The Angels have lost only 70 games are are the next team in contention for a wild card position. The (Devil) Rays have lost 71. The second wild card position is currently occupied by the A's, who have won 90 games.

The Angels, who can still theoretically tie the Rangers in the AL West play a double header today against Texas, and if Texas wins both games, the Angels will be eliminated from everything. In that case, if the A's win or the Rays lose, then the five teams who will fill the playoff slots are decided, but only Texas will be filling one of them (AL West championship).

I once called into a radio program and gave the formula for determining the magic number of any pennant race. It is:

(number of games in the season + 1) - (number of wins by team 1 + number of losses by team 2)
