When a baseball team is struggling offensively, it can feel like a week since it has scored a run. For the Miami Marlins, that is literally the case. Thanks to Milwaukee Brewers rookie Caleb Gindl's walkoff home run Sunday, the Marlins extended their streak of consecutive innings without scoring a run to 37 the longest such string of futility in the big leagues in 28 years. The Houston Astros were held scoreless for 42 straight innings in 1985.
But believe it or not, it's worse than that: the franchise hasn't had a base runner touch home plate since Derek Dietrich hit a two-run home run during the fourth inning of a 5-2 loss in 10 innings to the Washington Nationals on July 14.
Well, Im glad I can be a part of that, first baseman Logan Morrison told the Miami Herald sarcastically following the team's 1-0 loss in 13 innings to the Brew Crew. The latest setback followed a 2-0 defeat Friday and a 6-0 whitewashing Saturday. If the club-record drought continues with a fourth consecutive shutout Monday against the Colorado Rockies, the Marlins would own the second-longest dubious mark since 1918. The Chicago Cubs went 48 innings without a run June 15-21, 1968....
