Jim Kelly Has Cancer Recurrence.

This makes me sad...my husband had head and neck cancer and you need to be extremely aggressive in treating it.

Kelly had no chemo or radiation, and it's not good coming back within the first year.

Erie County Medical Center, the Buffalo, N.Y., hospital treating Kelly, released a statement saying, "Jim Kelly came to ECMC this week for continued testing related to his oral surgery. Unfortunately, it has been determined that his cancer has returned. Our team of head and neck cancer specialists is determining a course of treatment that will allow Mr. Kelly to battle this cancer successfully. Mr. Kelly has asked that you keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers."

Kelly underwent surgery last June to remove cancerous cells in his jaw. At the time, chemotherapy and radiation treatment were not necessary.

I don't understand why he didn't get chemo/radiation the first time. I know my link stated the doctors said it wasn't necessary but I know so much about this cancer and that is crazy to me...it was caught in 1 lymph node in my husband's neck, they never found the primary tumor but he got chemo/radiation. I can't find another link I read, but a doctor was saying the same thing I was thinking...you have to be super aggressive and now it has gone from stage 1 to stage 4.

When Kelly was still playing (or maybe it was when he retired), I remember watching a special on him before a game and he talked a lot about his handicapped son, Hunter, who lived longer than expected and died a few years ago. It was a tear-jerker. Here's a small link about Jim's last surgery...this cancer can be very disfiguring:

The oral cancer that last summer led to the removal of his upper left jaw and most of his teeth.
