Related: About this forumWhat is a Ute?
The University of Utah Utes are about to win the Pac12 and be one of the four CFP teams. But what is a Ute?
Ute people /ˈjuːt/ are in the Great Basin classification of Indigenous People, now living primarily in Utah and Colorado. There are three Ute tribal reservations: Uintah-Ouray in northeastern Utah (3,500 members); Southern Ute in Colorado (1,500 members); and Ute Mountain which primarily lies in Colorado, but extends to Utah and New Mexico (2,000 members). The name of the state of Utah was derived from the name Ute. The word Ute means "Land of the sun" in their language.[3] "Ute" possibly derived from the Western Apache word "yudah", meaning "high up". This has led to the misconception that "Ute" means people high up or mountain people.

In 1962 & 1963 I was a camper at the Ute Trail Boys Camp (ranch) near Lake City, Colorado. Our spiratual leader was Chief Ouray (fourth from the left in the picture). He was transformed into a large rock spire just west of the corral.
"High up in the Rocky Mountains stands the Chief Ouray.
Guardian of the Ute Trail Campers, all along their way.
He was brave and he was daring.
Like him, we'll strive to be.
Hail to thee oh Chief Ouray. Hail Ute Trail to thee."

I am literally looking out my bedroom window at Sleeping Ute Mountain on the reservation right now. Good people.
It would be great to see Utah win the Pac-12, not because I have any great affinity for Utah, but I do like a competitive conference - fresh blood and whatnot.
