Selig may force Cubs to give up 'significant' compensation for Theo

The Theo Epstein compensation still has not been resolved. The Cubs and Red Sox were so unproductive on their own, it was placed on the desk of MLB commissioner Bud Selig last week, but nothing concrete has happened since then, either.

However, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe thinks Selig may wind up giving the Red Sox something significant.

“I think the commissioner will give the Red Sox a significant player," one AL GM told Cafardo. "I don’t think MLB wants executives leaving their teams before their contracts are up and therefore he will try to deter teams from doing that again.’’

I followed the link and found this:

When pressed as to why it’s taken over three months to get to this point, Selig said: “The clubs tried to settle it themselves and I had a lot of patience because everything controversial ends up on my desk. In this case, I did give the clubs more latitude, both Chicago and Boston, in the hope they could come to some conclusion but they didn’t and it’s OK, so now I have it.

“That’s the way baseball is set up. If the Cubs can’t solve their own dispute, then the commissioner does. After 20 years, I accept that as part of the job and I don’t really think too much about it.”

my emphasis

Selig seems to be placing the onus on the Cubs - so who do they have?

The best prospects have already been called up. And i don't think compensation for an executive will end up being a player on the active MLB roster. I could be wrong, but that seems excessive.

They may have to give a prospect they don't want to lose and draft pick, or something like that.

Maybe Boston is asking for an active player, but somehow i don't think the commish will go that far. Just a feeling.

Unless, of course, they do a salary support thing like with Zambrano.

And, he would be useless in Boston because he can't play the field and Boston already has a better hitter at DH.

I think the player would have to be somewhat agreed to and Selig isn't going to force a team to take on another's bad contract. That would be a win-win for the Cubs. Shit, if the Cubs thought they could get rid of Soriano by hiring a new GM, they'd have done it a few years ago.
