London Irish to play Saracens in New York Premiership Rugby Union match

The English RFU responds to the NFL hosting matches in London by despatching London Irish and Saracens to play in New York. Personally I'm not in favour of NFL matches being played in London and equally I'm not in favour of this.

For one thing it would be better to support rugby in the US by allowing international teams like USA and Canada to play against the big sides more often. For another, I don't think that the English RFU has the money to promote the sport in the same way that the NFL can afford to promote their sport over here.

London Irish will play their "home" match against champions Saracens in New York early next year, in the first Premiership game to be staged overseas.

The round 16 fixture will take place on 12 March 2016 at the 25,000-capacity Red Bull Arena.

"This is an enormous opportunity for our club to gain exposure in one of the biggest sporting cities in the world," Exiles chief executive Bob Casey said

The game will take place in the build-up to St Patrick's Day and London Irish hope to attract New York region's significant Irish community.
