Whether or not the recent allegations and reports by Al Jazeera about the possible use of HGH by Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning are true, much has to be said about the way that the media has handled the controversy and the judgments that have been made by the court of public opinion.
When the Al Jazeera report was first made public on December 27th, it obviously got a ton of attention from fans and players from around the NFL. However, unlike the 'Deflategate' controversy which took place during the weeks leading up to Super Bowl XLVI and the 2015 offseason, many were quick to immediately sweep the reports and accusations under the rug and call them false.
Now, the question here is not whether Tom Brady and Peyton Manning are innocent or guilty of doping and deflating footballs. There is nowhere near enough facts to prove either innocence or guilt in the Manning case and the Brady case is still in the process of appeal by the NFL. However, the national media and the court of public opinion has reacted extremely different to the HGH accusations in the Al Jazeera report against Manning than they did when it came to Tom Brady and the possibility of being involved in deflating footballs.
For one example, the NFL has not launched a $5 million investigation into the matter like they did with Deflategate and commissioner Roger Goodell has yet to even address the matter. During Tom Brady's situation over the offseason, it took the NFL less than 48 hours to launch an investigation and to release an official statement on the matter following the initial report by ESPN's Chris Mortenson on the Patriots deflating footballs before the AFC Championship game.
