NFL COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS RAIDERS-CHARGERS STADIUM VENTURE IN CARSON

By Curt Sandoval
Updated 3 mins ago

CARSON, Calif. (KABC) -- The six-member NFL relocation committee has recommended the joint bid between the Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers to build a $1.7 billion stadium in Carson, sources tell Eyewitness News.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will announce the final decision if one is made. Any decision to move would have to win the support of at least 24 of the 32 teams.

Disney CEO Bob Iger presented the case for the Carson stadium project on behalf of the Chargers, Raiders and Raiders owner Mark Davis Tuesday morning.

St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke has been vying to build a stadium on land he owns in Inglewood, on the site of the old Hollywood Park.

And this would have ramifications east of the Sierras as well: either the Raiders or Chargers would have to be moved into the NFC, the way the Sea Urchins were a while back, and another NFC team would have to move to the AFC to replace them.

are you sure about the new alignment though? They'd be breaking up a stellar AFC divisional west rivalry.

One can only hope Rams' owner Kroenke will do everything in his power to stop this.

And the scheduling would be difficult if the road team in any given week were also playing in the Pacific time zone (Niners, Sea Urchins, or effectively Cardinals).

One of the them would have had to change. League rules (I believe the TV contract) won't allow 2 teams from the same division in one stadium so one of them would have to move to the NFC west swapping positions with another team. But since Davis has pulled the appllication, the whole point is moot.

NFL consensus builds for a Rams-Chargers stadium project in Inglewood
11 January 2015

On the brink of a vote that could return the NFL to Los Angeles, a consensus is building within the league for the St. Louis Rams and San Diego Chargers to share a stadium in Inglewood.

Multiple league officials and owners not involved with the Inglewood project, or the competing proposal in Carson, say there is momentum to pair the two franchises in what one owner describes as a "transformational" project backed by the Rams.

The Chargers and Oakland Raiders want to build a stadium in Carson, and to this point, Chargers owner Dean Spanos has stood by his partnership with Raiders owner Mark Davis.

The league officials and owners, who spoke on the condition they not be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter, say Spanos doesn't want to be seen as turning his back on a partner. This makes the path to what is emerging as the preferred pairing more difficult. However, the matter is expected to be resolved during the special meeting that starts Tuesday in Houston, where owners hope to find an answer to the two-decade L.A. vacancy.

Inglewood could use the economic boost more than Carson, which already has an MLS stadium, and that would give L.A. both an NFC and AFC team with no realignment required.

privately, he wants out of San Diego. Period.

Update of the owners meeting:

NFL owners have completed their first vote and neither proposed project -- Carson or Inglewood -- got the required 24 votes, according to multiple people with direct knowledge of the situation.

But the Inglewood project received the most votes.

Two options were on the ballot: the Rams and an unnamed second team in Inglewood or the Chargers and Raiders in Carson.

Rams site in Inglewood approved by owners by vote of 30-2. The Chargers have an option to join Rams in Los Angeles, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports.

The Raiders have bowed out and will remain in Oakland.

IMO. But I think the Raiders, Chargers and league see greater profit potential from the L.A. market even with two teams than with one L.A. team and two other teams in smaller markets.

...I have no idea why they rejected it other than they wanted the Carson stadium. Perhaps they'll reconsider now that the Carson plan has been buried in the toxic waste site the stadium was going to be built on. Which begs the question, where will the Chargers play next year? They already bid farewell to San Diego lol

...Carson. It's all poker. It gives the city of San Diego more time to get the financing of their plan together. And the Chargers can hold LA over their head. My guess is the offer with the Rams is still on the table and, barring a new SD stadium, the Chargers will move to Inglewood.

As for the Raiders, STL is looking for a team... Lol I think Oakland was a bit further along with their plan. They might actually stay in Oakland. I hope so.
