The least distinguished careers in NBA history

In April, the Cleveland Cavaliers signed Dahntay Jones to a one-year minimum contract. For the second straight season, the veteran small forward would appear in a single regular season game before acting as a playoff reserve.

Jones is a famously “chippy” player. He was suspended for a game in 2016 after punching Bismark Biyombo in the groin, and 2017 was much of the same – Jones was fined two-thirds of his prorated, league-minimum salary for an ejection against the Raptors, and didn’t do much else. (LeBron James covered the bill.) Save for a brief hero stretch in Game 6 of the 2016 Finals, Jones has more or less played the role of a hockey enforcer for the Cavs.

But he must be good at it! Thanks to those two short contracts, Jones has technically played 13 NBA seasons. That’s as many as Bill Russell, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. Few NBA players have made it that long.

Over the course of 13 seasons, Jones has averaged just 5.4 points per game, while shooting .439 from the field. He’s accrued 9.9 win shares, a stat from Basketball Reference that attempts to account for all of a player's production and defense on the court. (It’s a counting stat like WAR in baseball, so the more you play, the more shares you gain.) For comparison, Kyle Lowry – an all-star player but not MVP-level – gained 10.1 win shares just last season.

Jones might actually be one of the least productive players to make it so long in the league, putting him in the running for “least distinguished” career. Who is his competition? To find out, we can look at the win shares per season all 4,147 players in NBA history gained (through 2016-17) vs. the number of seasons that they played.

Not that he hasn't had a distinguished career but Vince Carter is STILL in the Association.

He's in Sacramento now. 19th season.

He was a big reason + Reggie Miller & the Pacers are a big reason why I got NBA League Pass now I have it every season for the past 3 years always try to catch a chance to see Memphis if they're in close game. I mainly watched the Bucks & Blazers two really talented teams.

The Suns make me realize by their inability to keep up how truly talented the NBA is because they have a good collection of young talent especially with the addition of 3 & D wing rookie Josh Jackson.

Look out for Minnesota. They should be good by the end of the season.

I caught the Cav Celtic game at the beginning of the year. With all the talk about moves by Houston Boston OKC I'd forgotten about the Cav's moves. Yeah they are old but they are deep even without Isiah Thomas. They could go 4 guards AND they can also have LeBron attack from anywhere. Love me some LeBron.

I like the Beast from Greece (credit Bucks announcers) myself from what I hear he doesn't like the Greek freak nickname.

And Milwaukee <> Minnesota

For those not in the upper Midwest: The distance from Milwaukee to Minneapolis is roughly the same as the distance from New York City to Richmond, VA. We just have a lot less people in between

On edit: To be clear, Andrew Wiggins is, of course, with Minneapolis. I was responding to the Greek Freak comment.
