Lakers trade Jordan Clarkson, Larry Nance to Cleveland for Isaiah Thomas, Channing Frye and pick

The Lakers said goodbye to two of their most productive role players on Thursday, agreeing to trade Jordan Clarkson and Larry Nance Jr. to Cleveland in exchange for two-time All-Star Isaiah Thomas, Channing Frye and a first-round pick.

The trade, first reported by ESPN three hours before the NBA’s noon trade deadline, gets the Lakers out from under the final two years and $26 million owed on the contract Clarkson signed in 2016.

Thomas and Frye both have expiring contracts, allowing the Lakers to gear up for a big-spending summer in 2018 if they can lure Paul George or LeBron James in free agency or, if not, for the following summer.

ESPN reported earlier this week that the Lakers had pivoted their focus to the summer of 2019, when Kawhi Leonard, Klay Thompson and Jimmy Butler could all be free agents. But Thursday’s trade signaled that they have not completely given up on the coming free agent class, which will include Thomas.

1. Wade Had To Go

He's old and slow, they're worse when he's on the court, he can't guard anybody any longer, but as Lebron's bestie, he got special treatment and that was a major problem in the locker room.

The rest, we shall see. Except for Nance, they still have no defense.

But for awhile he lead the 2ND unit and won games with defense. This was a favor to Wade who will be starting in Miami.

I've seen him block shots down the stretch.

Must be a one game on, one game off type of thing. When i watched, he was a revolving door.

Per Winhorst, there was some resentment in the locker room over the James/Wade situation. Of course, some of the whiners might be among those who also got traded.

I usually watch them when they come on if it is 7 or 7:30 ET. There was talk of Wade being 6th man he ran the 2ND unit efficient. 'm talking about strictly before the struggles before IT was healthy. IT was a huge liability on defense, that much I could see.

On edit I saw them lose to Orlando in Orlando the other day for example.

On edit: I probably watch Toronto most often because they come on early.

IT has weak defensive instincts. He's not a lazy defender, but anticipates badly, and then he's small. He's got no chance on a post defense situation, so they post him up, or force him to switch on p&r so he is way overmatched
Wade made that block in the Heat game last night, but he only needed the block because Bledsoe beat him badly. Bledsoe stupidly changed hands and got blocked. Wade recovered but in the NBA, great perimeter defenders play d with their feet! Wade used to be great at that. Not so much with his creaky knees. I watched him a lot last year, because he was here with the Bulls. He's pretty close to done.
