I guess the Evil Empire is now in Boston.
The Boston Red Sox will top the major leagues at about $223 million, ending the Los Angeles Dodgers four-year run as the top spender. San Francisco will be second at around $203 million, and the Chicago Cubs are set to be third at about $183 million.
The Dodgers and Washington Nationals will each be at approximately $180 million, and the Los Angeles Angels will be next at about $170 million. The Yankees will be at around $167 million their lowest payroll since 2003.

(16,113 posts)years ago, with giant contracts paid to many unproductive (or at least overpaid) players. Hell, it cost them $30 just to get rid of Panda, Rusney Castillo, and Allan Craig. Then they've got Price making $30 million and Hanley Ramirez at $22 million (think C.C. Sabathia and A-Rod's contracts a few years ago). Their management made some poor business decisions and they're footing the bill for it now. Much of that is the result of the previous administration (before they brought on Dembrowski) but I'm sure he's got a few turds waiting in the wings as well.
As I said about the Yankees before, when teams make a ton of revenue, what are they supposed to do with the money? Pocket it? Yes, I get the unfairness of teams that don't have that kind of financial or fan support, but for the teams that can do it, shouldn't they make every effort to try to put the best team on the field, rather than pocketing the money like the Marlins owner did for years? The Yankees leadership seems to have gone back to what made them a successful team in the 90's (a good bit of homegrown talent along with carefully selected free agents) while the Red Sox are now the ones saddled with the big contracts they signed to try to placate the fans.
