NL West News: Giants on Pace to Lose Over 100 Games

We might be witnessing the worst San Francisco Giants team to ever take the field.

After their loss to the Rockies on Saturday, the Giants were on pace for 102 losses, which translates to a .317 winning percentage. That would be a franchise record, for a franchise that started play in 1883.

7. Willie and Willie all the time

Juan Marichal, what with the pitching rotation, was hit and miss.

When the Giants were in town, the 90 cent right field bleachers on a Friday night was the place to be. Willie Mays ALWAYS threw the warm-up ball over the fence into the bleacher compound before the game started.

8. Classic memories that many will never have

Best to reflect on them again tonight after the Giants took it on the chin once again, 9-0! Cueto tosses a decent game but then the bullpen blew things up. Just as bad, it was R.A. Dickey pitching for the Braves and he came into the game with an ERA of 5.35. The Giants only managed three hits off of him over seven innings. Ouch!

The Nationals are looking better and better every day. Hell, I hope the Cubs get it together, too, and stick it to the Braves.

10. Fascinating

We just passed the 40th anniversary of Nolan Ryan vs. Luis Tiant. That game didn't go quite as long as the one you mentioned, but Ryan pitched 13 innings while Tiant stayed in for 14 1/3. The game ended in the 15th.

When you look at the game today, a complete game has become rare. Pitchers are often on limited pitch counts. Yet many of the best arms in the game from the 1900s had careers that lasted 20 to 25 years. It's quite a stark contrast between the eras.

The Rockies and Astros are crushing it. Looks like the Nats will have an easy time this year. They need to make some bullpen moves at some point.

Something strange and unforeseen has happened at the corner of Third and King streets in San Francisco. The Giants, who as recently as 2014 were crowned a dynasty after winning their third World Series championship in five seasons, are neck-and-neck with the Philadelphia Phillies for the unwanted title of “worst team in baseball.”

One of the side effects is not a surprise: Fans who not long ago had to pay steep prices to attend games at AT&T Park can buy tickets on the resale market for as low as half the price of a stadium beer. Great seats suddenly are downright cheap.

Upper-deck tickets to Friday night’s game between the Giants and New York Mets, both terrible in 2017, were available Thursday for $6 on StubHub — the minimum that Major League Baseball allows tickets to be sold on its partner resale site.

The beautiful park alongside China Basin has become a place where supply and demand is meeting wins and losses head on.

Today, Independence Day Eve, my miserable team is 33-51.

Despite wining their last six games in a spectacular fashion, they still are on pace to lose over 100 games.

14. Bumgarner's market value is in question after his motorcycle stunt

He's pitching triple-A with the Sacramento River Cats, but the initial reports are indicating he hasn't found his magic stuff yet. If he was traded, it's questionable whether he would be a significant asset to the Astros this year.

Rumors are afoot that Johnny Cueto could be the one who gets traded.

15. Bumgarner is now pitching Class A and still hasn't found his groove

Madison Bumgarner's nine-run, four-inning rehab start for Class A San Jose on Wednesday night has not dissuaded the Giants from targeting a July 15 return to the rotation in San Diego.

"For three innings he was really good," manager Bruce Bochy said. "He hit his spots well. The fourth inning was a long inning. That's when he gave up all the runs."

Bumgarner threw 76 pitches in four innings in a 14-1 loss to Rancho Cucamonga, a Dodgers affiliate. Bumgarner allowed three of the four homers and eight of the nine runs in the fourth.

The Padres’ Wil Myers hit his fifth home run at AT&T Park this season. That’s more than the Giants have received here all year from Buster Posey (two), Brandon Crawford (two), Hunter Pence (zero) and Joe Panik (zero) combined.

My Giants totally suck, and they are still on track to lose one-hundred games this season.
