Buster Posey back with Giants after unique offseason throwing program: diaper tossing

Buster Posey officially took the field for the Giants on Wednesday for the first time since the pandemic summer camp, when he decided to opt out because of health concerns over his premature adopted twin girls.

Since then, those twins, Ada and Livvi, have provided Posey with unique ammunition for his offseason training regimen. The catcher said on a video call with reporters that because his 9-year-old son, Lee, doesn’t help much with changing, unlike twin sister Addison, Posey likes to ball up used diapers and throw them at him.

“He knows that I’m about to fire it at him, so he’ll go running,” Posey said with a laugh. “I’ve been keeping my arm in shape that way by firing diapers at him.

“You have to really make sure that you have the right weight of the diapers. So, depending on how well they’ve been feeding, that plays a lot into my accuracy, and if it’s equivalent to the weight of a baseball ... I’ve been pretty accurate.”

1. Rumor mill is suggesting this could be Buster's last year, too

He would make one Hell of a manager.

I'm just saying.

But that being said, he is one entertaining player to watch.

2. Posey has a $22 million option year on his contract for 2022

I think the Giants will wait to see how Buster's bat responds to Kapler's approach. If he can find his power swing again and stay healthy they exercise that option and dump Brandon Belt in 2022. Posey eases into a catcher/first basemen and bench player, splitting time with Joey Bart behind the plate. And Bart gets one-on-one tutoring from the best in the biz. If not Bart, Tromp or Bailey. Giants are deep in prospects.

Agree he has the makings of a fine manager with all that Bochy/Righetti experience. But is that enough to lure him away from four kids and a ton of money? I could see him coaching Little League just as easily.

3. I believe that's what is driving the rumor mill

Buster Posey would have to have an extraordinary year for the Giants to justify optioning a $22 million contract on a 36 year old catcher. Hell, that's 15% of the Giants payroll, Baby! After his 2019 surgery and sitting out a year, people are wondering if he still has his mojo. I believe the best we can expect is just an average year, but I'll enjoy it.
