Help me ou. I have been buzzed today by a male BlueJay, twice. I live in Ohio

Obviously a new pair has set up a happy home near by my porch (mazel tov)

Pappas bird seems unhappy I am outside.

I do not have working air conditioning, so I sit outside.

Maybe strapping a beach umbrella to my yard chair would be a discouragement to a blue Jay?

I watched a group of them harass and ultimately chase off a huge hawk that dared to land on the wrong tree

About 05:00 not long ago and right under the street light I saw a shadow reflected on the sidewalk that shouldn’t have been there. Turns out we evidently have a regularly pissed-off owl that attacks people and their dogs. Darn bird almost got my hat!

Moved back from LA to take care of my dad, after his dialysis treatments he’d like to get what he called a “Wendybuger” so we’d stop at the Wendy’s and I’d share a Dave’s Double with him. But dialysis took so damn much out of him that he literally needed to eat and would sleep the rest of the day. But - and here’s the important part - he always wanted to go to the hydropark and watch the ducks and geese while he ate it. I’d always been into birding, I have a lifelist, but there was never anything more fun in any time in my life than hanging-out with my dad, eating a burger, pushing his wheelchair through his favorite park on the Columbia and simply letting him watch ducks. It was peaceful for him and a memory I’ll never forget.

I miss the Wendyburgers and days at the park wheeling him around. It was hard, but it made him SO happy! He had his favorite spots to hang-out, just up off the river, out of the way, he’d tell me stories of his childhood and fishing and arrowhead hunting. I hope I was a good son.

Thanks for the memory. I may or may not be crying right now.

... what ever you do, Federal law is very specific: you are not allowed to molest migratory birds or their nests in any way. They are very serious about this. Ohio state laws are as specific. An Ohio Wildlife officer will be glad to hold for the police to come out and handcuff and take to jail anyone they catch at it.

I found this out in Texas a few years ago when a handyman tried to destroy a nest of Cardinal nestlings on our back porch and I called the Dept of Wildlife and we had a cop come out here to explain this to him.

A couple of weeks, they'll stop bothering you, and in a month they'll be gone. Blue Jays are aggressive, but maybe an umbrella might work. If you're too close to the nest, if you can find another place to sit as far as you can from the nest.

Not the best answer, especially because there are few birds as territorial or as aggressive as a Blue Jay.

.... nesting area. And he is dive bombing your head because you are too close to their nest of little ones.

Sit in a distant area outside and try to spot where the nest might be. Then set your lawn chair up in a distant area when you want to relax outside.

Good thing it is a Bluejay and not a brown bear.

Good luck, hope you and the BlueJay can live peacefully this summer.

10. BlueJays are notorious for this. They are very defensive of the nest area.

Whenever I’m in the backyard, they land right next to me, saying, “ where’s my peanut?” They’ll land inches away and scold me. Makes my day.

I think they do more bugs than seeds for the babies, but don't quote me on that. Once hatched, the babies pretty much do just 3 things. Eat. Shit. Sleep.

So, whenever they are not sleeping, they are wanting to eat.
