I have to take my feeders down for a month or so as they pass through. They will empty two feeders in a matter of an hour or two. Between them and the cow birds, both of which form large flocks, I can't afford the sunflower seeds. When startled the all take off at the same time and it sounds like a 60mph wind gust!

They do eat a lot, but I don’t mind. I love being serenaded by them. They make my yard sound almost jungle-like.

They are still here, but will be leaving anytime now. I don’t know where they go, because I can see them all year ‘round, if I to Ojai Meadow Preserve, not far from me.

I thought because they like wetlands and marshy areas, they may go there to breed while staying local, or maybe they migrate north somewhere.

I miss them, but I do get Orioles and Grosbeaks that spend the spring and summer months visiting my feeders.

Last year one Redwing blackbird was left behind and hung out with the Brewer’s Blackbirds who also venture to my backyard when the Redwings leave. I felt a bit sorry for it—he had no one to sing with. The Brewer’s are always here, but hang out more in the front and steal the occasional cat food from our porch.
