I hate it when teams go for 2 down by 1

Arizona State was down 34-35 with over a minute left but they ran a 2 point play that had no chance of succeeding. They are 5-4 so they need a win to stay bowl eligible and guarantee they won't have a losing season.

It looks like they will have 1 more chance with 42 seconds left but hate to see a coach's decision cost them a win.

2. I wasn't watching closely (channel flipping) but I thought...

that they were generally outplayed during the game, so it might have made more sense to gamble on one play than to gamble on drives in overtime, especially with the emotional high of just coming back. (But I was watching four different games and cooking, so my perception is pretty suspect.)

3. They had a position before that where they were all the way at the 2

But Eno Benjamin fumbled in the end zone (that wasn't the first time that happened this season) & landed in the end zone for a touchback. They stopped them & took it all the way for 90 yards. They did both down 28-35. They were originally down 35-21.

ASU always gives up a TD first drive but they generally come back & play better in the 2nd half. They still have a good Dline even when they can't stop the pass.

I'm still mad about the fumble & missed 2. All I know is not going for 1 lead to a more likely to lose outcome (which they did) than going for 1 in that situation. They wasted a 90 yard drive with that play call.

I watched every ASU game this season from beginning to end.

ASU once came back from 42-10 to lose 42-32.

4. Not sure what coach Edwards saw

except that ASU has a way of finishing well in particular situations. The season would have had a different flavor if MSU hadn't missed their field goal. It was weird at the end of this one, seeing the game win resting on Eno Benjamin trying to make a pass completion in a play that looked to many people a broken option play. OSU was ready and desperate for that win, and had momentum most of the game. I don't understand, with momentum alone against ASU, why a field goal was not the order. ASU has better athletes than OSU and by stretching the game into overtime had a much better chance of setting up a winning situation. Anyhow, go devils!

5. There have been a few teams

that have adopted the procedure of going for 2 on every attempt (unless of course a single point with a kick would win the game).

They have more practice for the play than most teams, and some metric analyses have shown a positive result using this. There was a suggestion several years ago, which went nowhere, to allow teams to go for a 3 point play from the 20.

I realize that this post is not addressing the issue raised in the OP.
