Finding food amidst nature

Andy Benson snipped off the stem of a big thistle, cut it open and gnawed the insides out with his teeth. You can't take him anywhere without him snacking, it seems.

Often he's chewing on what others might call weeds. He's a forager, leading us on a June afternoon dining adventure at Mines of Spain Recreation Area in Dubuque.

He eats nettles and greenbriar, things most people hate to even see much less eat. He eats flowers and lamb's quarters and the roots of burdock, those weeds that stick to your pants when walking in the wild. Benson loves to eat grubs out of acorns.

He is not a picky eater.

he's quite the forager, berries, mushrooms, plants etc.

looks as if he consumes most stuff raw and was waiting to read a nice conclusion where he forages some trout from the stream and prepares a nice berry sauce with green salad as a side

He's afraid of mushrooms, rightfully so, although there are some good choices. Apart from that, it's important to note beware of surrounding prior to foraging, there could easily be chemicals and heavy metals falling onto them during a rain.
