Foothills Secular Humanist Society offers atheists, those questioning, place to share experiences

By SARAH FREISHTAT
Anderson Independent Mail, S.C.May 16, 2014

Karel Keel's husband and daughter worry for her soul.

She appreciates their concern, but she doesn't believe in heaven or hell. She can't bring herself to say the Lord's Prayer or the Apostles' Creed, and she doesn't worship a traditional god.

When Keel told her churchgoing husband almost 15 years ago that she was atheist, he was horrified, she said.

"I tried to be what I thought people expected me to be," Keel said. "I got tired of the charade."

It's a tough position to be expected to go along with what you don't agree. rug May 2014 #2

Millions of people who are in the same position Mrs Keel is in. When I'm in the company of religious people, I just say amen right along with them. What's the harm? Nobody hears it but them.
