An activist from the feminist group Femen who snatched the baby Jesus figurine from St Peters Squares nativity scene on Christmas Day remains in custody in the Vatican.
Iana Aleksandrovna Azhdanova, from Ukraine, was held in a Vatican cell on Friday, awaiting possible trial for disturbing the peace, obscene acts in a public place, and theft.
Azhdanova was naked from the waist up as she stormed the nativity scene and had the message God Is Woman daubed on her torso while thousands of pilgrims looked on.
Azhdanova was swiftly arrested by Vatican police after rushing into the square and plucking the baby Jesus from his place while shouting what were described as anti-religious slogans.

You know, they're under house arrest. Good enough, right?

(48,181 posts)The area known as "Vatican City" is part of Rome. Rome is part of Italy. Prior to 1929 this was the status of the Vatican, and had been since the unification of Italy in 1870.

(33,982 posts)No need to send official letterhead, if you choose the violence route. The whistling sound usually gets the point across.
But as Salvor Hardin used to say, "Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent."
No, what I actually meant was, no need for that at all. Nations could simply revoke recognition of the holy see as a nation. Not hard. Stroke of the pen. Profound consequences.

(33,982 posts)real world nation-states that don't have international recognition, or only partial recognition?
Suitable examples exist and highlight the limitations of that state.

(33,982 posts)Most territorial/sovereignty issues that plague non-recognized states wouldn't apply to the US, because we have the military strength to do whatever we damn well please, planet-wide.
A practical example might be refusing diplomatic recognition, travel, or immunity. Economic examples might include China or Russia drilling for oil in what was our economic exclusion zone in the Barents.
The latter not being a problem for the holy see, but the diplomatic immunity would be a pain point. Especially considering the misbehaviors of some of their people.
If the US announced such a severing of diplomatic ties, the WAVE of returning officials would be hilarious.

(48,181 posts)removing diplomatic recognition. What Italy does is up to them, but they could declare the Lateran Treaties null and void, the product of a criminal state, and stop recognizing the territorial rights of the pope and his minions. No invasion would be required. It isn't going to happen, of course, unless there is a new wave of malfeasance uncovered that greatly exceeds the astounding malfeasance that has already been documented. Even then, this institution is now known to have spent decades covering up pederast priests and other horrific crimes, and has used its nation status to do so, and the world has more or less said "meh", so I'm not holding up much hope that anything will end this nonsense. It was just a passing fancy.

That asking what the United States would do is silly/nonsensical (I used the word stupid) because the United States has the military wherewithal to force the point. The Vatican does not. The Vatican has loaner security services from external sources only.

What vile filth should we allow that church to get away with, abusing such nation status before it is revoked?

I support any nonviolent political protest that breaks through the media blackout. Femen goes bare breasted because the media just can't leave that alone. Consequently their action got world-wide coverage. Good for them.
