This is the way the world ends; not with a bang but an eclipse. Or so some Christian ministers have said.
Many on the internet are worried that Fridays solar eclipse is a sign of the end times, or a message of judgement from God. And while the theories are largely speculative, they are encouraged by a genuine collision of three rare and significant celestial events on Friday. As well as the eclipse itself, a Supermoon and the Spring equinox are also set to happen all three of which have in the past been celebrated as events of significance within various cultures around the world.
As well as the rare and spectacular sights in the sky, those who advocate the theory that the eclipse and other events are a sign of the end times or an omen of something else say that recent ominous events also show that something could happen.
Stupid motherfuckers.

I think someone in the Science discussion board linked to an article in the last couple of days. I was amazed; there's a partial or full eclipse somewhere on the planet several times a year.
So much for science and religion being able to co-exist.

(6,719 posts)How could we have gone from a country with expanding educational opportunities to a country ignoring education -- and facts, smile. Statements such as this make me glad I am old. However, I will celebrate the equinox/eclipse event! Love the sky and the forces there that we really do not understand. Watch the sunset every night that it is visible.

Incredibly, fucking unbelievably sad.
Centuries have gone by, yet many still seem to be content living in the middle ages.

(48,181 posts)At least not until it doesn't happen, so the position "the end of the world starts with an eclipse this friday" and "that is complete nonsense" are equivalent.

(7,886 posts)the doomsaying, there's always a prophecy that says the end is around the corner. Judgement day is at hand, or that there will be a judgement day. I think that the boat load of doomsday prophecy that come out really make an imprint ton the culture's psyche. There is a constant message that the world is ending, and everything is called a sign of it, while we know that it's a load of horse hockey, it still leaves an impact. It's a main driving force behind religious motivations too, do good so when judgement day comes, you'll be judged worthy.
It's also the reason people exploit the world, who cares if we wreck the place if the rapture is at hand? As long as they have Jesus in their heart, then the world is theirs to be master over.
