Regardless of what our personal feelings are about belief, we all fall somewhere on the line. This is purely voluntary, and is not meant to be a call out, but more informative of the theological makeup of belief and non belief. It is flawed by nature and I'm going to limit it to 5 general options. If you don't feel it covers you please select other and write in what you feel and why.

(14,177 posts)Gnostic Atheist. Someone explained that to me and I was like wait wut. Yes it does describe me, but I don't think that it is actually the same as being an Atheist. The position of saying we can't know either way to me isn't really Atheism which is why I don't call myself an atheist. I have not determined that there was no such thing as a prime mover, yet I think it is very very unlikely.

(19,705 posts)You'd be right that 'knowing' isn't about atheism at all.
gnostic= know
Agnostic= don't know
Theist=believe
Atheist= don't believe
The terms are mutually exclusive.

(34,527 posts)I am pretty sure there is no God and all our knowledge points to there not being one?
Or do I have to KNOW 100% there is no God?
Lordquinton
(7,886 posts)And gnostic theist is 100% there is a God.
That 1% saying that we can't rule it out, buat can safely disregard it along with all the other myths is still agnostic. Even Dawkins falls on that with the addition that he could be easily convinced that God, or gods exist with just one solid piece of evidence.

(5,764 posts)It just means you believe it CAN be known whether or not there is a God. That acquiring such knowledge is possible.
You don't have to claim actually TO know just at the moment., contrary to popular misconceptions.

(7,886 posts)So know for sure, don't know for sure kinda thing, else it gts co.plicated and fights break out, which was not the intent here.

(20,018 posts)...because, technically, I can't prove -- even to myself -- that there's nothing out there we MIGHT call a god if we met it.
In regard to all of the gods that have been proposed thus far, I'm a full-blown atheist.
I think all the stories that have been told are completely nuts. (And more than a little bit evil)
Can't prove that a god is impossible, but we can pretty easily prove the human gods so far aren't real.
NastyRiffraff
(12,448 posts)I know I am. Unlike believers, who are so sure their god exists and everybody had better worship him/her/it, most Atheists take the scientific view that according to all available evidence, there probably is no god. However, if credible evidence is ever presented, I'd be very willing to look at it, and be convinced if it holds up to testing, peer review, etc.

(5,764 posts)...whether it's worse to be an agnostic theist and admit room for doubt in their conclusions, or worse to claim gnostic theism and then have to defend the position.

One of our regulars told me s/he couldn't even imagine (or admit to imagining, I imagine) for the sake of argument that his/her deity did not exist.
I felt bad.
Kind of.
