CHENNAI: Atheism is out for DMK president M Karunanidhi. He is courting god to save the shaky DMK by engaging priests from Tirupati Tirumalai Devasthanam to chant Vedic hymns at his Gopalapuram residence here last week. For a party founded to defeat the Brahminical hold over society started by Ramaswamy Periyar, MK’s holy acts have enraged critics. His son and political heir MK Stalin has also been criticised for visiting famous temples during his ‘Namukku Naame’ campaign trail across the state.

“It shows our leader’s tolerance of the beliefs of others and his manners not to hurt them in any way. When the priests are reciting mantras, it will be uncivilised and rude to stop them,” said one of the party functionaries. The controversy arose after a TV channel run by the Devasthanam wanted the rights to air the Telugu version of the television series on Sant Ramanuja Karunanidhi has penned.
