Pope says Church should ask forgiveness from gays for past treatment

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE | BY PHILIP PULLELLA

Pope Francis said on Sunday that Christians and the Roman Catholic Church should seek forgiveness from homosexuals for the way they had treated them.

Speaking to reporters aboard the plane taking him back to Rome from Armenia, he also said the Church should ask forgiveness for the way it has treated women, for turning a blind eye to child labor and for "blessing so many weapons" in the past.

In the hour-long freewheeling conversation that has become a trademark of his international travels, Francis was asked if he agreed with recent comments by a German Roman Catholic cardinal that the Church should apologize to gays.

Francis looked sad when the reporter asked if an apology was made more urgent by the killing of 49 people at a gay club in Orlando, Florida this month.

Asking forgiveness for acts you continue to commit is not acceptable.

A straight person confessing sex outside of marriage is expected to try to "sin no more". Rarely happens though.

In this case, I think Francis has the clout to make sure it's more than a weak try. Like him or not, he knows the harm the Church has caused to people.

While Gays are prevented.

This is blatant homophobic bigotry.

That's the issue. That needs to be addressed before any kind of apology should be offered, at the very least.

They, with many others, can not receive the sacrament of matrimony.

Who do you think should make the rules for sacraments?

Maybe you should ask the FFRF to write a letter.

Spouting "bigoted rules" doesn't say anything.

How is specifically targeting LGBTQIA not bigotry?

Nothing else you said had any bearing on the question.

If you want to talk about their other discriminatory practices please start a new thread. This one is specifically about LGBTQIA issues, as the Pope (who compared them to nuclear weaponry) says the church should ask for forgiveness.

And the church does campaign against gay marriage, I have never heard them campaign against divorcees getting married, but if you want to talk about that please start your own thread.

And sacraments.

It's also about the Pope saying what needs to be said.

You want to start a thread about "inherent bigotry"? Take your own advice and start (another) RCC-bashing thread. But you don't get to dictate what threads are about. And typing "inherent bigotry" does not magically transform your words into facts.

for holding fast to the doctrine that homosexuals are "inherently disordered"? Or for continuing to oppose marriage and adoption for same sex couples?

Yes, beat someone, apologize for beating them, then resume beating them. A familiar refrain.

And since I can only see one reply out of 4, someone has apparently (and predictably) stepped up to defend the catholic church's homophobic bigotry. Again.

People like Bill Donohue, for instance. Not many of them on DU but it's easy dealing with them. Not much you need to do - their behavior speaks for itself and lets everyone else know where their priorities really lie.

...his apology is impossible to square with his efforts to prevent gay people from enjoying the same rights afforded to straights.

If he wants people to stop treating gays like they're inferior, then he should stop telling everyone gays are inferior.
