Ohio Governor and former Presidential candidate John Kasich was in New Hampshire recently to endorse fellow Republican Chris Sununu for Governor. But a strange thing happened after his announcement.
During a tour of downtown Exeter, Kasich entered a bookstore, saw a Harry Potter book, and shared his irrational thoughts about Daniel Radcliffe, the openly non-religious actor who played Potter in the movies:
What does that even mean?

(14,531 posts)is upset that a citizen of a foreign country is not crediting god for his financial success. Give Kasich credit, he isn't upset that he made his money portraying a wizard and try to ban his books in OH schools.

(6,355 posts)...that Kasich always views the world through a religious lens and it impacts every decision he makes. From providing women in Ohio will sufficient health care options to making small talk. Everything gets filtered through a god-lens.
And, as always must be said about Kasich...what an asshat. Good that he's watching this general election from the sidelines.

(2,678 posts)I would ask you; what the hell is wrong with you and, more importantly, why do you care. Pretty sure Daniel doesn't care what you think, one way or the other.

(7,820 posts)Is this strain of Christianity that assumes worldly success = God must really, really like you. Poor? God's obviously angry at you. Not a practicing Christian, but pretty sure that's the exact opposite of everything Christ preached.

(48,181 posts)and while the current version is from the late 20th century, there is plenty of similar christian theology going back at least to the reformation.
Here's wiki:
Prosperity theology (sometimes referred to as the prosperity gospel, the health and wealth gospel, or the gospel of success)[A] is a religious belief among some Christians that financial blessing and physical well-being is always the will of God for them, and that faith, positive speech, and donations will increase one's material wealth. It is based on traditional interpretations of the Bible in Judaism (with respect to the Hebrew Bible),[1] though less so in Christianity. Prosperity theology views the Bible as a contract between God and humans: if humans have faith in God, he will deliver security and prosperity.
The doctrine emphasizes the importance of personal empowerment, proposing that it is God's will for his people to be happy. The atonement (reconciliation with God) is interpreted to include the alleviation of sickness and poverty, which are viewed as curses to be broken by faith. This is believed to be achieved through donations of money, visualization, and positive confession.
It was during the Healing Revivals of the 1950s that prosperity theology first came to prominence in the United States, although commentators have linked the origins of its theology to the New Thought movement which began in the 19th century. The prosperity teaching later figured prominently in the Word of Faith movement and 1980s televangelism. In the 1990s and 2000s, it was adopted by influential leaders in the Charismatic Movement and promoted by Christian missionaries throughout the world. Prominent leaders in the development of prosperity theology include E. W. Kenyon, Oral Roberts, T. D. Jakes, A. A. Allen, Robert Tilton, T. L. Osborn, Joel Osteen, Creflo Dollar, Kenneth Copeland, Reverend Ike and Kenneth Hagin.
Prosperity theology has been criticized by leaders in various Christian denominations, including within the Pentecostal and Charismatic movements, who maintain that it is irresponsible, promotes idolatry, and is contrary to scripture.

And for its reformation era precursors see Calvinism, predestination and "the elect".

(15,210 posts)Health and wealth? Those are definitely blessings from God.
Sickness and poverty? Well, that's God testing you, or having a special plan for you, or knowing better what you need than you think you need. Then you're supposed to be thankful to God for "giving you the strength to endure", or some other hand-waving like that.

What did anybody expect to come of that? Jerry Fucking Falwell?
(Christopher Hitchens notably said of Falwell on his death, that if he had an enema he could have been buried in a matchbox. True!)

Yeah, who'll "make it big" - the guy already world famous for having the most Olympic medals ever, and who won even more, or the guy already world famous for winning 3 of the highest profile medals 2 games running, holding 2 of the highest profile world records, and winning those 3 events again - asks the governor barely no-one had heard of before he had brief fame as "the only sane candidate left".
And then there was the time he decided to explain the basics of Judaism to some Jewish theological students, again in a bookshop.
