A Sunday story.

Do we all have a choice? Speaker Ryan - or Speaker Pelosi?

Infamous Republican incumbent Martha Roby:

Democratic challenger Tabitha Isner:

Why I’m Running

"In the 4th chapter of Ephesians, Paul begs his listener to live a life worthy of the calling to which he’s been called. Since childhood, I have known that God called me to serve, and I have and will continue to spend my life trying to live up to that call. That’s why I am running for Alabama’s Second Congressional District. My political views are firmly tied to my faith, the idea that we are called to feed the hungry and care for the sick and liberate the captive. I believe that we do better by our children and families when we support abundant life for all rather than fearing that there isn’t enough to go around. In these United States of America, we can all enjoy abundant life, but it’s going to require courage and faithfulness to our ideals. We can restore unity and strengthen the bonds of peace, but It’s going to require humility and gentleness, patience and bearing with one another in love."

I therefore a prisoner in the Lord beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all gentleness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. – Ephesians 4:1-3

1. She's being very careful not to identify as a Democrat

on her website. I didn't find the word anywhere there in a cursory search. So, is she a Democrat? It's hard to tell. Maybe that reticence is needed in Alabama. I don't know. Where does she stand on major issues. That's also not clear from her website.

She's being as openly Christian as she can be, but what's her position on reproductive choice? Where does she stand on firearms control? How will she vote on immigration bills? What's her fiscal policy look like?

I don't live in Alabama, so my opinion won't matter in that election, of course.

2. You act as if any of that matters.

She's the Democrat - and that's all that matters.

Do you think she's different from all the rest of the Democrats running down here?

3. As I said, I don't vote in Alabama.

It's too bad, I think, that she shuns the word in her website, though. I think that's a mistake. But, it's her choice.

There is another Democratic candidate in that district, running in the Primary race. That candidate clearly identifies herself as a Democrat. That may make a significant difference in the primary race, I'd think. Here's her website:

7. Yes, we do have traditional progressive liberal Democrats running for office down here.

We just can't manage to get them elected in our gerrymandered districts.

We have had one Democrat elected to this district since the '60's - and he lasted one term. Actually, he just switched parties and is running in the Republican primary against Roby!

10. Well, I suppose the voters in that district will pick the one

they like best in the Primary. Their choice. I didn't know there were two Democrats running until I did a search. It looked like the only Democrat on the primary ballot was the one you put forward. Imagine my surprise to find another well-qualified Democratic woman running for that position. I would never have known, had I not searched. I'm glad I did.

What I have put forward is the informed, experienced and knowlegable choice we will have in November.

You found an out - "I'd vote for a different Democrat."

Well, what about the Democrat we are going to get?

As for the two Democrats, I don't know the likelihood of either winning the primary race. You might know that better than I. Why do you prefer the one you brought up in that district?

a Christian. No bible verses on her website, though. Just her credentials, which seem pretty substantial. And her positions on important issues, which seems to me to be important.

I would have said she's being ostentatiously Christian, which she is.

Anyway, MineralMan in no way implied there is anything wrong with the candidate being openly Christian, he simply noted that undeniably true fact about her.

16. LOL, Republicans do that where I live, as if it fools anyone.

I'd vote for her if she was the Democratic nominee in my district. I'd much rather have someone who isn't too ashamed of her party affiliation to name it, and too ashamed of her positions on the issues to tell everyone what they are.

4. And here's another Democratic candidate running for that seat:

Audri Scott Williams

Heres' her website:

And here's something from her About Me page:

Audri will be a Democratic candidate for the 2018 elections for Congress in the State of Alabama. She has been a servant of the people at a grassroots level locally, nationally and internationally for over three decades. She has received numerous awards for her service to humanity, including a “Service to Humanity” award from President William Clinton.

She gets right to the point on issues, too. She's a Democrat, and isn't afraid to say so. Her background is excellent, and I think she'd be a good choice.

There's a primary. There are two Democratic candidates. Democratic voters will choose the one they prefer, I expect.
