The interview between Scalfari and the Pope was published March 28, 2018 in La Repubblica. The relevant section on Hell was translated by the highly respected web log, Rorate Caeli.
The interview is headlined, "The Pope: It is an honor to be called revolutionary." (Il Papa: È un onore essere chiamato rivoluzionario." )
Scalfari says to the Pope, "Your Holiness, in our previous meeting you told me that our species will disappear in a certain moment and that God, still out of his creative force, will create new species. You have never spoken to me about the souls who died in sin and will go to hell to suffer it for eternity. You have however spoken to me of good souls, admitted to the contemplation of God. But what about bad souls? Where are they punished?"
Pope Francis says, "They are not punished, those who repent obtain the forgiveness of God and enter the rank of souls who contemplate him, but those who do not repent and cannot therefore be forgiven disappear. There is no hell, there is the disappearance of sinful souls."

On the other hand, decent people are troubled by the notion, no matter how devout they might be.

(146,295 posts)Uff da! I've already done that, and dismissed it as fantasy. I doubt I could do it for eternity. That sounds like punishment to me. I'd rather my soul disappeared, which would come as no surprise. I think such a thing only exists while we live, anyhow.
Next, I suppose, the Pope will admit that God is actually just a concept of man's mind. Now that, I think would demonstrate good reason and logic on his part. Perhaps he'll do that soon.

ASH WEDNESDAY
Catholics Really Love their Pope.
His open mind & allowance of humor is more akin to the human frailties of their religion.
Guess that would be the call to preach "Forgiveness"

I recall the day it was finally rewritten for the English only among us. Which, back then was everybody I knew.
I recall the women's rights movements and (gasp) BIRTH CONTROL & the Catholic church strongly f.o.r.b.i.d.d.i.n.g Catholic women from using it along with the threat of eternal damnation.
Catholics being Catholics, every female of reproducing age I knew began happily using "The Pill".
Hell be damned. We'd take our chances.

Ya its dumb but that's the sarcastic mood i was in when I signed on here. Too much Trump TV perhaps contributed to that mood.
I have to live every day of my DU life with that name.
Maybe THAT is hell!

You're coming at it from the viewpoint of a believer while I'm not. There's my confusion.

(6,288 posts)I guess I was speaking as someone who understands how people become believers but also how they can eventually become non believers. Or skeptical at best.
They are somewhere in the comfortable middle rather than "head first, all-in" believers.
They are believers with what is preached until he gets to the point where the human psyche says, "wtf? Naaah, that's not how it is."
i.e. Never lose your ability to trust in your own moral compass. Never hand it over completely to someone else.

(17,304 posts)Easter worshippers ducked for cover as debris rained down on the floor by Michelangelos Pieta statue yesterday. The Vatican reported no injuries and minimal damage, just after a spokesman strenuously denied that the Roman Catholic Church was changing its tune over the afterlife.
No words in quotation marks should be considered as a faithful transcription of the Holy Fathers words, a Vatican spokesman said.
