Heres the latest suggestion from Bryan Fischer, the omni-bigot who made hate-mongering remarks about the Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island, African Americans, Muslims, gays, grizzly bears and Mormons: The government should use health care reform to mandate that everyone attend church and to impose a tax those who dont.
Fischer, the director of the American Family Association (AFA) and an icon (no pun intended) of the Christian right, laid out his plan for improved health through enforced church attendance on his Focal Point radio talk show July 5. Inspired by a listeners comment, Fischer noted that he often speaks on his program about how people who have an active, vibrant spiritual life are healthier. Then he makes a leap not a leap of faith, a leap of logic. It goes like this: Because having an active and vibrant spiritual life is good for peoples health, the government ought to force people to go to church or pay the consequences a special atheists tax.
We oughta have an individual mandate from the government that everybody has to go to church because after all Obamacare is all about improving the health of the American people, Fischer says, taking a jab at the Affordable Care Act. We know that going to church is good for you, its good for your health so we are going to mandate that you go to church for your own health and we are going to tax the atheists who dont go to church. Now we cant make you go to church but were going to penalize you if you dont. Were gonna assess a tax on every atheist that doesnt go to church because those atheists are endangering their physical health.
Although Fischer was perhaps attempting to be facetious, the implication that people who dont go to church are atheists disregards the millions of people who may find spiritual nourishment at sacred sites, mosques, synagogues, temples or any other place of worship, including the original awe-inspiring nature.

Dare I say that this guy is a real jackass?
Grizzly bears attacking people, you can't explain that. So kill them all.
Perhaps someone should point out the mountain of data on the relationship between religiousness and social well being of a country.

Has he not heard of the 1st Amendment? Plus, many, many Christians either don't go to church or go only on Christmas and Easter. That alone would eliminate the deficit.
What about a practice what you preach tax? Claim Christianity but don't follow the instruction of Christ like, love your neighbor, or when you have done this for the least of these you have done it to me, you get taxed. We would then have a surplus. Oh, wait. Christians do have a practice what you preach tax, it is called Hell.

(6,452 posts)He was constantly writing letters to the editor about the evil atheist/Muslim/homosexual conspiracies and other pieces of crap. I guess we weren't batshit crazy enough for him, because he left Idaho and moved down south somewhere.

(13,029 posts)We've all seen how the militant, radical atheists in America have advocated making church attendance illegal, or taxing people for going, right?
So the people on this board who claim that "fundamentalist" atheists are just as bad as fundamentalist Xstians are spot-on, right?

(13,029 posts)that "militant", "fundamentalist" atheists in this country are just as bad as this guy, or a boatload of other Xstian whack jobs, is hardly a "natural ally", political or otherwise.
But you're right on cue..thanks for not disappointing.

(13,029 posts)So there was no parroting going on...just another of your lame inventions.
But do explain why anyone would be a "natural" political ally of someone who they regard as just as bad as the people they're fighting against.
Do you think the statement that DU members are natural political allies is a "lame invention"?
Do you think nonatheist DU members are "just as bad as the people they're fighting against"?

(13,029 posts)why someone you hate as much as the people you're fighting is a "natural ally"
And what I called a "lame invention" was your claim that I was parroting my own talking point as opposed to addressing yours.
Since you've regressed (again) to making shit up, rounds are over.

(41,205 posts)Actually, to be fair, I don't think he's really recommending that non-church-goers be taxed. He is being snarky about Obama's healthcare plan and the individual mandate, and is dragging in his religious prejudices. Either way, it's nasty.
