(7,753 posts)this was a common sense conclusion which would be reached by any rational community without the need for a supernatural force to tell us how to behave!
Who'd have thought it?

(49,533 posts)I'd say you haven't studied the history of religion very much. Many of them (or at least many sects and denominations of them) have evolved to be peaceful and tolerant today, thankfully.

(11,064 posts)Is that FIRST COMMANDMENT from Exodus 20:1-17 not to be taken seriously?
Have you not seen the results of such intolerance?
Are you unaware of the history of religious intolerance? And the resulting hatred and violence?
Are you unaware, from the Bible alone, all the stories of the hatred and violence produced by such religious intolerance? In how many Biblical stories have those who have followed the religious teaching smote (past tense of smite) their enemies who were perceived as having worshipped another god or gods?
"Thou shalt have no other gods before me" = Hate your neighbors if they worship any other god or gods.
And deliver violence to them if you can. (I.e., if you are strong enough, if you are in the vicinity of such persons and have the opportunity to do so, and if you have the support of other like-minded individuals similar to yourself.)
If the First Commandment, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me," is a core value, why not accept it as it is?

(19,705 posts)Change it to "MANY religions...". Because saying that NO religion teaches that is just plain false. The monotheistic religions directly teach that there are "others" that shoul be looked down upon, need to be "saved", or will suffer for eternity for not conforming to the one true religion.
The idea that religions are some kind of feel-good, let's just all get along kumbaya is just plain nonsense.

(6,271 posts)Although cruelly suppressed by the British invaders, Thuggee was for centuries a widespread phenomenon in India, and its adherents chiefly worshipped the goddess Kali.

Learn about Thuggee and its attractions before revisionist Hindus erase its beloved memory from history. And yes, that would be the first time a religion attempted to erase its history.
