Harrisburg Mayor Linda Thompson, who frequently talks about her life as a Christian and prays for others, will deliver the welcoming remarks to the Pennsylvania State Atheist/Humanist Conference in Harrisburg.
The conference, billed as a gathering of atheists, agnostics, humanists, and secularists, will begin its main events at 9:15 a.m. Sept. 29 in the Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown Harrisburg. The gathering will feature presentations by several nationally and regionally known atheists and humanists.
Thompson, a member of Goodwin Memorial Baptist Church in Harrisburg for several years, said that she was raised in the church and starts each day on her knees in prayer.
Last year, she participated in a fast and prayer meant to help Harrisburg during its financial crisis. It was organized by Christian, Jewish and Muslim leaders, who called for three days of fasting and praying for a more cooperative spirit among Harrisburg government leaders, the business community and residents.
